    Hi,
I am running Windows 98 on my laptop and I was trying to determine why I cannot see my other computer through Network Neighborhood.

I decided to go to the Help Files as suggested, "The network is not accessible, look in the Help Index at the topic "Network Troubleshooter. "

When I clicked on the Windows Help, I clicked Troubleshooting, then Windows 98 Troubleshooters, Networking. I then bulleted "I am unable to find other computers in the Network Neighborhood list. "

When I clicked NEXT, I received a blank screen.

I also tried other categories and also received blank screens.

I would appreciate any help in getting the help files to display so I can do some troubleshooting.

    Thank you.

    Jean

All of the troubleshooters in 98 have been disabled by critical updates, not a defect but a feature. :)
Do you have both computers in the same workgroup name?

    Hi,
Thanks for trying to help me.
Yes, the three computers do have the same workgroun name, "Workgroup." Obviously I have overlooked something as they all used to be able to see each other. I have two Windows XP computers and my Windows 98 laptop networked. Interesting though is the one Windows XP computer and see my laptop but the other one can't. My laptop can't see any of them. I am planning to replace this laptop soon with a new one so I don't think I'm going to worry about it for now. Thanks for your help.

I didn't know that the troubleshooters for 98 were disable by some of the critical updates I downloaded. Had I known that, I wouldn't have updated 98.

Oh well, I guess that is why Microsoft makes us update our computers.

Some 98 machines will do a DHCP request to the XP machines. If it doesn't get through you have no Microsoft Networking. I have a 98 machine networked to an XP Home machine, and it will only work like this.
It does this by <originationIP>:68 to <destinationIP>:67 using UDP protocol. If you are using the XP firewall, try creating an Exception by selecting Add Port, make it for UDP 67, click on Change Scope and select "My Network (subnet only). Be sure to do the last part, else you are opening a dangerous port to the internet.

Wow Mark, you have overwhelmed me. I just am not that technical to make the changes and also don't understand much of what you wrote about.

I just don't know where to start so let's just forget it, OK?
