When I try to run windows Help (start > Help and Support) I get the error "Your current security settings prohibit running activex controls on this page, as a result, this page may not display correctly "

I thought my ZoneAlarm Pro was causing it, so I shut it down, and still get the same error. All of my Internet security properties are set to default levels.

I dont use help that much, but it comes in handy sometimes.

    Hello neonhomer,

The ActiveX settings are set in Tools > internet options > Security tab > Custom level. There, the first settings are for ActiveX.

These settings are set seperately for each zone, ie, internet - trusted - restricted.

To go into MS's sites, this setting has to be enabled/ or prompted for: "Run ActiveX and Plug-ins "

Info on these settings and their use/non-use: in the Security /Viruses board - pinned article on "Safe Browsing ".

*I thought my ZoneAlarm Pro was causing it, so I shut it down*

Pardon my harshness, but a dumb thing to do. Excellent way to get infected with a worm.

    Regards - Charles

I had shut it down with my system offline. I did not completely shut it off, just shut it down to see if it was the problem. (When my system comes back up, it automatically reloads :) )

Do you have security patch MS03-044 loaded?

Also, I'd suggest an online virus scan. RAV will scan and fix any problems it finds.

My system scans itself weekly w/ NAV.

I went and checked my settings, and activeX controls are enabled, but I still get the same message.

As for the patch, I am not sure, but I am checking on that as i type this. I dont think i have it though...

I suggested an online scan since some infections can disable your onboard AV so that it appears to work but does nothing. Probably not the case for you but worth a quick check.

Especially worth a check since the 03-044 security hole is in the Help and Support piece of your PC.

Well, I still have not fixed my activex problems I have been having with Help & support. There are times that I want to use it, and cant because it will not let me in... No viruses, no worms. This is beginning to irritate me.....
