Resolved Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown

    I am in erious need of help. I have an Asus K72J laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I have had the system since August and I keep experiencing a problem where the system will reboot itself and I receive the error message that "Windows has recovered from an unexpected error ". It seems to be happenning more and more often lately, about 5 times a week.

    I have cheked to ensure that I have all the latest drivers, and I have run an in-depth virus scan. I don't know where to turn next. I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software issue, though I suspect software. Of course this is happening at the most inopportune times, like when I am hosting a web conference meeting. Very frustrating.

    Has anyone else run into this problem? Can anyone point me in a direction? I am lost and confused!

    Per instructions from an earlier post, I am posting the output of a memory dump here. My system keeps rebooting at times 3 times a day. One question, my system last rebooted yesterday and I captured the memory dump today. DO I need to do this immediately after the system reboots or is this okay?

    The dump data can be debugged at any time, but you have not posted the complete log - the majority of it is missing.

    From the little info in the log you posted ......

    vsdatant.sys is associated with Zone Alarm - I guess you are running this?

    athrx.sys is associated with Atheros WLAN card - I guess you have one in the computer?

    Totally my fault. I failed to copy the eniter log and notice that fact when I posted. To answer your two questions, yes I run ZoneAlarm Extreme Security and I have a Atheros AR9285.

    I will repeat what Arie said re. the interpretation of dump logs .....
    My suggestion is twofold ......

    Check for updated drivers for the Atheros AR9285 either direct from Asus or from Atheros.

    If the problem remains .....

    Check for updates to Zone Alarm - if there are none it would be worth uninstalling it completely on a temporary basis and installing Microsoft Security Essentials and use the Windows Firewall.

    I was using a thrid party driver update package. I went direct to Asus and found an update to the Atheros which I have installed. I will run this way for a while and see what develops. IF that fails, I will do as you suggest and uninstall Zone Alarm and see where that takes me. Thanks for your time Pete!

    So far all is well. After the input I received here, I intended to remove ZA and see what happenned. I did contact ZA and they supplied a couple of links to Microsoft Patches that seemed to indicate there was an issue between ZA and Windows 7. Before I could do any of that, Service Pack 1 was released. I decide to go with it under the theory that perhaps the patches ZA spoke about were incorporated into SP1. Since I installed it, my sysem has stayed stable. I have not a single freeze or reboot and I left ZA running. So I am encouraged for now and will let things be for a period of time and see if it remains stable.

    FYI - SP1 includes hot fixes previously only available from MS on request - odds are that you are home and dry on this one!

    Yup. And the next time Microsoft fixes something it will 'break' ZA again. It has been that way with ZA since the early days & the reason why I dumped ZA way-back-when!

    I am going to mark this thread as resolved. The system continues to remain stable and I now know that the issue was a conflict with ZA. While ZA does a good job at what it does, it is also a piece of software that has caused me problems before in areas that other firewalls don't. At some point, you know the proverbial "when I get the time ", I am going to dump ZA and replace. I think Arie's comment about the inevitability to return as a problem is quite appropriate.
