    Hi,
I consider myself to be a pretty good all round computer guy, but i think i've been beaten. I was away for a few days and i found that when i returned my pc was overrun wuth malware. I then promptly ran Spybot: S&D, which usualy does the trick. In this case it didin't. I then ran "Hijack this" which also had no effect, i also tried a new program to me called "CWshredder" (didn't seem to have an effect.). I then tried an all round reoving program called AVG (Free edition). The scan took about and hour and after it completed the program asked my which files i wanted to delete, i removed all the one's i couod. I then got a message asking if i wanted to reboot to complete the process, i clicked yes. After the reboot all seemed normal up the the point where Windows tried to run a disk check as it would after an inproper shut down (Which was not the case), but it never got a chance and it quit. Then the login scree apeared, and i tried to login as usual and i heard the welcome sound as i would but then the only thing to happen is my background appears, that's it!

I've been running all programs through Taskman, but i must have deleted some of the windows files in the scan. IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN RESOLVE THIS WITHOUT REFORMATING??

    Thanks in advance, Ross.

P.S If this is any help it's XP pro and during the reboot Spybot was also attempting to remove any malware before windows loads (as to remove it before it gets into memory, this obviously not run.).

    DC_Ross_Dark - Welcome to the Board :)

First off - please observe Posting Rules #3 - Meaningful Subject - I have edited your title.

I assume that another user was using your PC while you were away?

I think you misunderstand the nature of some of the programs you have run ....

Simply running HJT only scans your system - nothing is fixed automatically! Selected items in the scan can be fixed by checking the check box to the left of an entry and clicking on Fix. However, you are strongly advised to fix nothing unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing. Much better to post the log here for one of our experts to examine.

CWshredder attempts to erradicate CoolWebSearch - if you saw no indication of anything being 'fixed' the odds are that you are not infected with CWS.

This is a standard - and very good Antivirus program. It is not recommended to run or install more than one AV program at a time to avoid conflicts.

Hit F8 and keep on hitting it as soon as the BIOS beep sounds - you should get a DOS type screen with several options, one of which is 'last Known Good'. Try that if you can.

If that doesn't work and you can get into the computer use System Restore - the command line should you need it is %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

If all this fails you could try a Repair of XP

Good Luck - sounds like you may need it :)

Have you tried going into "safe mode" ?

If you had a previous AV installed and then installed AVG, could be having some conflicts. If you can start windows via safe mode, do an immediate "uninstall" of AVG.

Likewise, if you can get booted into safe mode and after the AVG part, click on start, on run, key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    and OK.

You'll probably be asked for your XP install CD. If you have one, put it in the drive and the system file checker utility should replace any missing or damaged system files it finds.

If you don't have an install CD (some OEM boxes don't ship with one) but you do have an I386 folder, post back and we can give you directions for making SFC look to it for the needed replacement files.
