    Greetings all,

Recently purchased a used PC with Windows XP. I noticed that it still had Service Pack 1 installed, so I attempted to upgrade to SP3. I did this through windows automatic updates. For some reason, SP2 was installed instead. Since it took so long for this installation, I decided to shelf the problem for a few days.

Today, when I booted up I noticed that windows had more automatic updates to be installed. So I clicked to small yellow icon and chose express install. This took about 20 minutes. At the end, I restarted my computer.

After logging in, I noticed that the yellow icon had appeared once again suggesting more updates. When I attempted to install them, everything began running extremely slow, eventually becoming non-responsive. I rebooted -- same thing. Again, and again.

I decided to boot up in safe mode. Went to msconfig, made sure everything in the startup tab was unticked. This did not solve the problem. I tried system restore from safe mode, but this feature appears to be corrupted since none of the dates I chose were successful. I do not know what else to do, any suggestions? Your expertise is much appreciated.

*I would post my HijackThis log, but for some reason it is about 10 times larger than usual (306,000+ bytes). Not sure why..?

If you think it worked alright after the SP2 upgrade you can uninstall all the HotFixes after that and perhaps get back to that point. The uninstall files are located in subfolders of the Windows folder and will be colored blue and have a $ before and after them.

I'd recommend a chkdsk /r run to check that drive for any possible errors too. It may also need a Defragging so check that as well.

Please close this thread. I decided to scrap it altogether and reformat.

    Thanks for the reply surferdude.

Wise move 111, I'm sure. When a new install doesn't work, it's not going to get any better. ;)

    All the best,

    Dude
