I am helping a lady who is running a Dell Latitude with WIN XP PRO.
I cannot find the Window folder anywhere in Explorer.

Is there some other way to find it or is it hidden somehow?

Some installations use Winnt as the installation folder.

    Hi, Paul ~

When you say 'Window folder', are you referring to the 'Windows' directory in the root, another type folder or a specific window?

I am refering to the Window Folder that was always under the C drive--where you could open it and it would list allkinds on folders and files--IE: temp, temp internet files. history, fonts, ect, all the stuff running in windows.
Mine is listed listed under my C drive and was the same on all computers I have seen. She has multiple users on her machine but I was under the Administrive section.

If it has no c:\windows folder then c:\winnt is the windows folder just as Abraxas said.

All standard clean 2K and XP installations will use c:\winnt. If you upgrade a drive that already has a c:\windows folder and chose that as the installation folder then you would have a c:\windows folder and no winnt folder.

WHY? are you poking around in the windows folder???

Is this the WaffleHouse Princess's computer?

No this is not the Waffle House princess computer--she can't even spell computer let alone use one. All she knows is -- "Do you want NO 1-2-3-5 off the menu and what are you drinking "

The lady picked up her computer earlier in the afternoon before I got the message about the WINNT folder --but she is coming back today and I'll take another look for that Winnt folder.

I was poking around in there trying to clear her Temp folder and move Disk Clean-up to the desktop (Idid get that done another way).
She got this thing used off someone and her daughter loaded all kinds of junk on it which I got rid of --also did the Black Viper thing--then I looked and found out she doesn't even have SP1 on it--I have a SP1 disk but after reading all the horror stories and with the stuff she had on it I was afraid to take a chance and try to install it.
I explained that to her and she seems happy with the way it's running so I let it go.
I was just miffed about the not finding the Windows folder.

    OK Paul

The temp folder in the WinNT folder is not used as in 98. It can and should be cleaned though but you will notice it has very little.

The folders you want are in c:\Documents and settings.

There will be a folder for each user that has been set up on this computer. Like Administrator, All Users, Paul etc.

The temps are in a hidden folder called Local settings. In order to see these folders you will have to browse to the folder say Administrator then at top of My Computer click Tools-Folder Options-View then down in the box put dot in show hidden etc. you will then see the Local settings. Go into this folder and you will see all temp folders. Clear all contents but not the folders themselves. Do this for all users (some don't have any temp folders).

Remember to set the Show all back to hidden when you are through.

Another folder to empty is the c:\winnt\prefetch.

    Then do the following:

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run

    Should now be pretty clean.

Thanks Mike--I knew about that "Show Hidden Folders" and I have it clicked on mine--I did not know you had to reset it back.

What is the reson for setting it back?

    Thanks again, Paul

The deal with the Wafle House Princess is over to I just rid of her Mother for reasons I don't like to talk about.

    Oh sorry Paul!

Anyway the reason for setting it back is so normal users cannot tinker with special files and folders.

Mike, that did it--now if I just click on my Disk Cleanup once a day will it be sufficient or should I run the
    cleanmgr /sagerun:1 everyday
Thanks once again for all the help

Paul I would not do this daily. Every couple of weeks. But the sageset:1 sets the defaults so you should run the cleanmgr /sagerun:1

    Hi, Mike ~

I have multiple desktop & notebook units at home here with standard, full retail XP Pro or Home clean installations, not upgrades to a drive, and have only the C:\Windows directory and no winnt directory.

You are correct Bruce! I knew what I wanted to say but ******* it up.

Actually it uses the winnt folder if it detects the windows folder or indications of a previous one.

Thanks for catching that! I make a lot of mistakes especially in typing because my pea brain as small as it is still outruns my typing! Smile!

    Hi, Mike ~

 Gimme a break! You know you are far from a pea brain. :)

I am not trying to catch anyones mistakes but my own. I pointed it out from sheer curiosity since what I was seeing was different.

Okay, so I understand it to be a winnt directory if a previous format/installation existed, right?
