In Windows Explorer in "details" mode which I always use it correctly displays a small icon to the left of .jpg and .gif files indicating the default program that handles these files, but for .bmp files it tries to make that small icon a tiny microscopic preview of the picture, which I don't want it to do because it takes a long time for large .bmp files and does a lowsy job. How can I switch this off? I have a screen capture of what it's doing at http://home1.gte.net/deleyd/winexp.jpg

Notice how the .jpg and .gif files display the icon for IrfanView (free image viewer program) but for the .bmp files the computer tries to display a tiny image of the picture. I want it to just display the symbol for IrfanView like it does for the .gif and .jpg files. IrfanView is the default handler for .bmp files.

Thanks for bringing Irfinview to my attention. I am impressed with it's functions and will probally use it a lot.
To answer your question.....How can I switch this off? I have a screen ......
run Irfinview, go to OPTIONS > PROPERTIES > EXTENSIONS ...... unselect the -- Use Thumbnails for BMP -- box.
