When I try to open a rather large folder (>10Gb) containing photographs and other sub-folders of photographs, I have recently been presented with the message
Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

My operating system is XP3 with all critical updates. Its in-built firewall is on and I have Advanced System Care Pro and Microsoft's Security Essentials permanently running.

I would like help to overcome this annoyance please.

    Thank you PeteC,

I had only to delete one entry and that cured the problem.

    Again, many thanks.

Sorry, I've had to "Unresolve" it.

I had disabled one item in the ShellExView window and had success in opening the folder.
However, sod's law has intervened and I can no longer open it.

I've diabled all non-Microsoft items without resolving the problem.

I have also used eTrust and Trend Micro's scanners as suggested in the link, but they revealed nothing nasty.

    What else should I try?

    ******************

I have discovered if I change the folder settings, through right clicking/Properties, to an ALL Files type so that it displays icons rather than thumbnails, the problem doesn't happen. I can click on any icon and the picture file is opened up in my default Graphics program.

Yes, it seems that many of the problems are due to file sizes.

Put about half the files into another folder and that has, at least for now, solved the problem.

    Thank you.
