Hi! I am very new to computers and not too informed as to which security products will protect my laptop best. I have both, Norton anti- virus and Microsoft Essentials, both,I am told, offer the same level of security with one being free software, as the only difference. I would really value any advice, as shortly, I shall be using my laptop more often.

    Thanks.

Hi gordonjoe, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

On all my systems I use Microsoft Security Essentials and I have been pleased by it. Its doesn't slow down your computer like Norton does and its free.

I have always avoided Norton since I've had bad exerperiences with it. So if I were you I would go with Microsoft Security Essentials over Norton.

Microsoft advises only one virus scanner and one spyware on the same system as Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Hi Gordonjoe,
Like many people I had problems with suites like Norton and Zone Alarm and have given up on them, looking for simple, and effective protection. Either I have found it, or I have been very lucky.
Since the Windows 7 RC became available, more than six months ago, I have relied on only the MS Security Essentials and the Windows 7 firewall, and have picked up no infections at all. Every week I run a full MSSE scan, and a Malwarebytes scan, and neither have uncovered any infections.
They are both very low profile, free, do not impact on performance and are so far very effective.
It is best not to have any other anti-malware running full time if you do use MSSE, to avoid any clashes.

    Roger
