Hi Dave. Providing more information will help. Can you boot the computer into Safe Mode? What caused the computer to quit booting into Windows normally? Did the keyboard all of a sudden stop working? Have you made any recent changes before this problem occurred?

Is this the machine that is listed in your System Specifications that is running Windows XP or another computer? Did you try another keyboard?

No this is not the computer listed in specs. This is a Toshiba laptop Satellite pro running Windows 7. I dont know how to try another keyboard. Cannot boot into Safe mode, I have no keyboard function. Computer starts in Boot manager. Happened all of a sudden after grandson was using for Mindcraft. No changes made to hardware or software.

Beep code may give a clue as to what is wrong - do you know the model no. of the laptop?

I have been unable to find the make of Bios installed in the Toshiba - I suspect it is a Toshiba modified bios - the only clue was a post which suggested unconvincingly that it was basically Phoenix.

Can you interpret the nature of the beeps, i.e. x beep - pause - y beep - pause - z beep where x,y,z are the no of beeps. Maybe clearer here ......

    BIOS Beep Codes List

Does the laptop beep regardless of whether or not the external keyboard is plugged in?

Constant beeping with interruption... no clear pattern
Only happens with external keyboard because using that I get Windows to attempt a start, keyboard on machine doesnt work

Strange that the beeps only occur with the external keyboard connected - continuous beeps with no discernible pattern may indicate memory failure, but I would expect a similar reaction using only the built in keyboard.

If the memory is removable I would carefully remove it and clean the contacts, replace and try booting again. May be a long shot, but worthwhile I think.

If no joy I would guess a hardware failure of some sort.

Can you get into the bios or the keyboard isn't working even before accessing Windows. There are two possibilities loose connection or the keyboard needs to be replaced. Sounds like a hardware problem.

It's still conceivable that a pair of contacts beneath a key have collapsed and are shorting out.
Guess so, especially as it dates back to Windows 7 - not a spring chicken any more :)
