Well, so far the title isn't very accurate, as it hasn't been "easy" at all!

I took the plunge and bought a new computer, running Windows 7 Pro. I thought I would use my external hard drive to transfer needed data from my old XP Home machine to the new one. I followed the instructions for the Windows Easy Transfer program. I installed the program on my external drive then plugged it into the old computer. I went to the old computer and navigated to the Easy Transfer program. It created a file on the external drive and began sending files to it. It was going to be about a four hour process. After about an hour, the process failed. I tried it three times. Error messages would pop up saying, "Windows Easy Transfer can't copy your files to this Easy Transfer file. The Easy Transfer file might be corrupted. Restart Windows Easy transfer and create a new Easy Transfer file. "

I would follow those instructions but it would fail again. Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong would be appreciated.

Yea, I wouldn't know why one would need a program to transfer files.

Just copy all your data (by default in the My Documents folder) to the external drive, connect it to the new PC and copy the data.

I used the EASY deal once... I have a USB to USB cable that came with the software.... Only really cute thing was that it setup my email accounts and copied the emails over... both of which are pretty easy to do manually anyway.

I thought using the program provided would be easier, but that isn't proving to be the case. I'll try to just copy the files manually.

Like Steve said, it could be helpful copying over some email account settings & maybe some other program settings, but anything it does can be done manually.
