I have an XP pro system with AVG 9 plus Windows Defender

My HDD was massively fragmented and this was seriously affecting speed and performance. The HDD only had 7% free space, However the Windows defragmentation utility requires 15% free space. I managed to free up the 15% by deleting obsolete aor unused programs, transferring masses of photographs to another HDD and carrying out a Disk Cleanup. I was extremely careful not to interfere with the XP pro O/S or currently used programs during the cleann up.

Disk Defragmentation has resurrected the system.

However, since defragmenting the HDD I now find that Windows Defender is turning itself off.

AVG 9 is pretty good and I have scanned the system with Windows Defender by turning it on manually. Consequently I am fairly certain that the problem is not being caused by malware.

Can anyone please help me solve the mystery of why Windows Defender is turning itself off?

Hi Peter. How is Windows Defender turning itself off? Is it enabled and running when you startup your computer? Try this, open Windows Defender and click Tools< Options. Scroll down and where it says Choose when the Windows Defender icon appears in the notification area, make sure the option is set to Always. When done click Save. After that click the Microsoft Spynet icon in Tools of Windows Defender. Select the option that says Join with Advanced Membership and then press save. Close Windows Defender and reboot the computer.
