Don't know if you found the answer from Arie's link but it's easy to resolve. I went through the process of finding the answer, took me hours.

Click - Start > Run > then paste this in
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

Select OK

It will ask for confirmation, say Yes.

Now run the update for Windows Defender again and it will update.

It is a problem with the definitions update which I would have thought they may have fixed by now.

Re: 0x80240022 error

Hi! The above suggestion (start, run, type msiexec, etc.) did not work for me. Other suggestions I tried & that failed were (in no particular order): 1. using Windows & Microsoft Update; 2. deleting the contents of C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates & then reinstalling Defender; 3. (I'm not sure now to explain the following clearly.) Go to Windows\Software Distribution\ Download folder & look for the Install folder. If the Install folder contains mpas-f.exe, then look for the About file. Right click it, choose Properties. The modified date should be March 2. Double click Install definitions if date is ok. (I don't know if one gets the date from Windows\Software Distribution, opening the ReportingEvents.log with Notepad & scrolling down to the most recent entry.) If the Install folder or mpas-f.exe are not there, clear the contents of first the Download folder & then the Datastore. Go to http:\\v5.windowsupdate/micrososoft.com/ v5consumer/showarticleaspx?articleid=11&ln=en. (it's not there now) & revisit MS Update to see if Definition file is offered. Some of the above solutions have worked, but not for me. Neither has KB915105 & KB918355. :confused: explorer1

Re: 0x80240022 and 0x80246008 error messages

Hi! After much loss of sleep and reading the bulletin boards over at the MS website, I found a solution that worked for me in dealing with the Windows Defender (WD) problem! And one doesn't have to reinstall it or reboot. I looked through the error codes I was getting in the ReportingEvents.log and the WindowsUpdate.log, wrote them down and went hunting for them at the MS website. I worked through the solutions I got in the various KB's. One of the error nessages, 0x80246008 (I didn't look through them all), had to do with BITS. The solutions are discussed in KB910337 plus making sure that BITS was started. It worked :) ! It also solved the error 0x80240022 that I was receiving in WD as well as all the errors I was receiving because Automatic Updates wouldn't work, in addition to WD. There were no error messages in either of the above .log files :D ! As well as solving the above error codes, the following ones which also showed up in the .log files disappeared: 0x80004015, 0x80072ee7, 0x80080008, 0x8024001e, 0x80240fff, 0x8024402c, and 0x8024888b. (Some letters were capitalized in the error codes but it makes no difference.) Thanks for your input :) . explorer1
