You might want to indicate what you tried, so we don't repeat stuff...

Now 0x80070422 normally means that a required service is not running or has been disabled.

It can also happen if you are infected with Vundo.

Did a couple scans and apparently no Vundo.
I didn't try anything as I couldn't find any decent fix online. A scan was suggested (forget which) and it was neg. Also scanned w/ Malwarebytes and AntiVir - both negative.
Made some changes to speed up startup/shutdown a wk or so back.
Do you know what I should look for?

Check and see if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service, DCOM Server Process Launcher and Automatic Updates services are set to Automatic.

    These should all running.

Where do I find Background Intelligent Transfer Service, DCOM Server Process Launcher?
The auto updates are turned off, as I'm done w/ MS giving me files I don't want. Don't recall what the issue was, but once I turned off the auto updates the problem disappeared.

They're started and set to auto except auto updates as I said.

2nd thought, I've had no trouble manually updating Windows Defender until now, and Windows Updates has been turned off for months now.

On the MS website it suggested restarting Windows if Defender won't update. I decided to re-download Defender - still wouldn't update, but at least I have the latest ver. I then restarted the computer and it now seems to work fine.
I'll wait a day or two to see if it's all OK before marking this "resolved ".

Have you by any chance installed the new Microsoft Security Essentials? If so, I believe it disables Win Defender.

The Automatic Update service should be set to Automatic & started. If you have AU set to not to download updates in Control Panel, the AU service will have no impact on it.

Steve, no I don't have this. I typically avoid MS.

Arie, I wish I could remember what happened, but there was a problem and resolution was turning of AU. Once I turned it off the computer was fine.

With that service off, you aren't going to be able to have Defender update itself.

My solution was to update manually. In the past this has apparently been fine.

All right, I decided to turn auto updates back on (I hope I won't regret this), though I set it to manual, so at least I'll have some say in the junk MS wants to stick into my box.
