I have a problem that I think relates to Windows Defender Updates.

I am running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Every day I get an error message which is "Live update" "Program operation error please restart your computer and try again ".

If I check update history via the control panel there are no details of any failed updates.

If I look at Windows Defender and check the website I find that my definitions updates are out of date. I then download the latest update without any problems.

There are 2 things that make me wonder if something else is causing this error message.

1.Yesterday I got the message, checked update history and found that the latest definitions update had been successful. This has only happened once.

2.Last week I decided to disable Defender but still got the error message.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi oldgrumpy, are you sure this is windows defender (not norton perchance)? I only ask because windows defender doesn't have a Live Update process?

If you use Norton please let us know and we can take it from there.

Which anti virus software are you using?
As I recall - if you're using the new Microsoft Security software - it disables Defender from working.

Thanks for your response. I do not use Norton. I use Avira AntiVir Premium which updates automatically (and seemingly successfully) every 4 hours.

Fair enough, can you give us the exact error message? This doesn't appear to be a Windows Defender error.

A sound - then a blue globe (looks a bit like a golf ball) with a yellow curving arrow across it pointing north east appears on the task bar. Click on it and a box shows on the screen with a grey surround and "Live Update" in the top left of the grey area - a white X in a red box on the top right (also in the grey area) and the words "Program operation error. Please restart the computer and try again" appearing in the centre part of the box.

The sound/ message occurs about 5 or 10 minutes after switching on, well after everything is running OK.

You mentioned Norton. I have a relatively new machine (Acer 5742 I5) which came with McAfee on a 60 day trial. After a month I un-installed it and put Avira on instead.

Hmm. Oldgrumpy, does your machine by any chance have a SimplePass fingerprint reader from EgisTec, Inc.? I've recently begun getting the identical error message about five minutes after boot-up on a six-month old HP notebook with SimplePass Identity Protection installed. The graphic you describe is the icon for the SimplePass "Live Update" function, although EgisTec might use it for some of their other applications as well. I think what is happening in my case is that SP is automatically trying to update after boot-up, but for some reason fails, producting the message. Otherwise, SimplePass seems to be working o.k. I've noticed if I try to run the Live Update function manually from the SP "control center," I get the same error message after a minute or so. Can't find anything on this on the EgisTec web site. Haven't tried HP customer support yet.

Many thanks Sojourner. I have various programs from EgisTec which are under the banner of "MyWinLocker Suite ". Apart from having a cursory look I have not done anything with them. I cannot see "SimplePass fingerprint" among the programmes but I have had a look at the EgisTec website and there does seem to be (or has been) a problem with updates so this may well be the source of the error message.

    Hi Sojourner,

You were correct in identifying the root cause of the problem. Having looked at "MyWinLocker" I decided that i would not want to make use of any of the features it offered so I un-installed it.

Problem seems to be solved - no more live update error messages after start up.

    Thanks a lot
