I got my upgrade to Win 10. I don't have anything that shows Windows Defender in the System Tray.
When I go into it, I see "real time protection" is turned off. In fact, it's grayed out with no way to turn it on.
It was enabled before I updated.

    What's the problem?

    Thank you,
    Chris.

Hi Chris. What security programs do you have installed on the machine? Did you upgrade to Windows 10 from a previous version of Windows?

You will not see it in your system tray. Windows Defender does not do that - even when enabled.

And as Evan is implying, understand if you have a third party anti-malware program installed, Windows Defender will automatically be disabled.

It would be unusual for Defender to be turned off if you Upgraded from W7 with Defender in use.
MS advice of things to prepare BEFORE the Upgrade to W10, was to uninstall or Disable any 3rd. party Anti-Virus programs. Then once the Upgrade was successfully completed - you could initiate your AV's of your choice.
Have you had all necessary MS updates installed since the Upgrade to W10? Neil.

Hi Chris, are you inside the 30 day period since the W10 Upgrade?
If so, you will be able revert back to W7 but make sure you have your original W7 DVD and Product Key.
I would use this option as you will be able to uninstall any 3rd. party AV software you had. Make sure you get W7 running trouble-free and with all updates before you attempt to Upgrade to W10 again.
I had no trouble Upgrading to W10 from my W7 Pro 64bit OS as I made sure everything was up to date and running correctly.
Any problems with your Windows OS before using the Upgrade to W10 will be migrated as you have found out. In all the upgrade problems users have had with W7 to W10 the most common trouble I have seen has been an OS that had a small problem and the users thought the new OS would fix it - WRONG!!
The other common problem I've read about was the failure to follow MS advice to Disable/Remove 3rd. party AV's.
MS can't/don't want to stop users from their choice of AV software. MS are trying to make the transition as smooth as possible without those 3rd. parties interfering with the Upgrade and once the W10 upgrade is working stable - then you can install whatever you want/like providing it is compatible with W10. Neil.

This will be worth reading through.
