I manage over 50 Windows XP computers in a small business network. A few of them need to run Windows 2000. As of a week or so ago, Windows defender started failing to update (only on the Win2K PCs) with the following error: 0X80240022. Wrong diskette in the drive. Insert ..., etc.

    Any thoughts?

Seems to be a problem with the signature file.

    To fix:

    1. Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start > Run, type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}, click OK.
    2. Open Windows Defender.
    3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and then click Check for Updates.

If that doesn't work, go to WindowsUpdate & see if it will update from there.

    Defender still not updating

    Arie

I tried your suggestion and it still fails. Last night I was working on my wife's Win2K PC at home and noticed that the defender definitions were dated 8/4/06. I went to Microsoft Update and the defender update DOWNLOAD failed so it's not getting to the point where it tries to install. Note again that this issue seems to be related to Win2K only--not XP>

    Thanks

    OK, another fix I found:

    1. Stop Windows Defender
    2. Start > Run type Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C} (hit OK)
    3. Accept defaults
    4. Start > Run type services.msc (hit OK)
    5. In the Services window, make sure that both the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and the Windows Installer service are started
    6. Restart Windows Defender
    7. Hit the Check for Updates button

Just in case the above didn't work for you, try disabling your firewall and/or antivirus program while updating your definitions.

There have been reports that a 3rd party firewall prevented the update & that caused the same message.

Yet another solution mention installing the root certificate update from Microsoft Update, custom update. This is labeled as an Optional update.

    Still not working

    Arie

I did everything you said and it still is not working. I guess the confusing thing to me is that all other updates work fine (from Microsoft Update) and Defender was updating fine for several months. On ALL Win2K machines I am dealing with, the same problem exists and they all stopped updating at around the same time (late July/early August). They fail at the end of downloading the update so they never try to install (I can tell this from the Microsoft Update symptoms). I can't believe others are not seeing this as well.

    Thanks

    Others are seeing this too.

Please contact Steve Dodson from Microsoft's WD team. He has asked for input in the event of definition update problems:

One caveat is that users behind SUS or WSUS servers may be running into issues set by their system admins, so I cannot help there. However, home users and others not behind corporate update servers please let me know your signature woes (if any). My contact information is below; just drop the "online" from the email.

    Defender problem fixed!

    Arie

Thanks for the help. Steve pointed me to a Root Certificates Update (KB924123) which fixed the problem. After installing this, Defender updated fine.

Glad you pointed me to him!
