Hi sallycanuck and welcome to WindowsBBS :)

We'll need a little more information than what you've supplied.

See Microsofts system requirements to start but be aware even if you have enough memory/processor etc you may face issues obtaining drivers for your hardware.

My advice is to leave well alone unless you have a need to change the operating system.

If I have the right machine (shown here) then either PCMCIA or USB should work. Make sure you buy one with drivers for ME/2000 (whichever OS you stick with).

As a beginner though you may be better taking the laptop to a store and have them install wireless for you.

As Windows ME only has built-in support for USB 1.1, a USB device that is designed to work with *both* USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 will function, but only at USB 1.1 speeds. But ONLY if it's designed to work with BOTH.

Bear this in mind if you decide to use a USB wireless option. Check whether the USB device is designed to work with USB 1.1 (i.e. look on the box), because if the box says it is designed for USB 2.0 only then it won't work with WinME, at least not on your motherboard's USB ports.

Windows ME *does* have built-in USB drivers, but they are USB 1.1 drivers. You can't run a USB 2.0 device on the built-in drivers. So the device must be specifically stated to be for USB 1.1 (whether or not it is also for USB 2.0), or it won't work in WinME.

To use a USB 2.0 device in Win ME you have to buy an add-in USB 2.0 PCI expansion card. That is an option for a Desktop computer only: you can't do it on a laptop.

After hunting around at photos of the model it seems to be a 1 gig intel Celeron that came originally with XP Home
One of the other photos seems to have a small XP logo on the computer
    Standard ram was 256 mb
It should handle 2000 no trouble
Your trouble may be getting the drivers
Toshiba has some legacy support but you have to hunt around
If you do install 2000 you will have to hunt for drivers
Although its a toshiba laptop most of the peripheals- sound video network ,will be some one elses
Using a diagnostic program such as Aida32 might tell you
You can install a network card - PCMCIA or wireless PCMCIA network card to get you on the internet

have fun its the only way to learn
