I have just recently installed Firefox on my new Vista PC, so now, if the browser is not already open, every time I click on a link in an e-mail to access that particular web page, I get an error message: Windows can't find http://whatever whatever.com.

I have already made Firefox my default browser, but I guess Vista does not want me to do that.

Does anyone know how to fix this, or stop this error message from popping up?

    Thanks,
    Sandie

    Hi sandilew,
Not a solution; a work-around. Your new computer is wonderful for multitasking, so start firefox before reading your mail!

Suspect there's a bug in vista that causes your problem, and if that's true, you'll have to wait for an update to fix it.

    Thank you Sparrow,

A "bug" in my new Vista, did you say? OK, I guess I'll just have to get used to it, along with all the other "bugs" I'm finding in my new Vista. I swear this programing has more "bugs" than my entire back yard.

Thanks for answering. And yes, as long as I open the browser first, I don't get the pop up error message.

    Take care, :)
    Sandie

    There is no Vista/Firefox bug.
What email program are you using?

I don't know for sure if it's my anti-virus causing the problem, but I have now turned off scanning of e-mail. But if the problem persists, I am going to ignore it. As long as I open my browser first, it doesn't happen. And I won't use another antivirus program. I use Avast, and it has worked very well for me over the past several years. So this little "glitch" just isn't enough cause for me to be rid of it, and no real proof that is the problem either.

Thanks for letting me know it is not just me having this probem.

    Take care,
    Sandie

Please, post back, if turning email scanning helped at all.

I turned off my anti-virus scanning e-mail, and it made no difference at all. It didn't do this when I had IE7 as my default browser either. Only after I made Firefox my default browser.

OK, did that, didn't solve the problem.

I even went so far as to uncheck "allow access to IE" and it still did it. The minute I went back and looked, it had changed it back to "allow acess to" and both Firefox and IE were checked.

Vista is simply determined to do as it wishes. And apparently it doesn't matter if I am Administrator or not.

I had to turn off user control because it would only allow me to run my own programs if I right clicked on everything, and chose "run as administrator." Otherwise I constantly received "access denied" messages.

I am the only person in the house that uses the computer. I am administrator, and I even set a password to make sure the PC KNEW I was administrator, but with user controls on, it still denied me access unless I chose "run as administrator." Total pain in the ass!!!

Oh yes, my browser opens immediately when I click on the URL in the e-mail. Just that the little error message pops up first.

It wasn't opening before changes, right?

    Sorry Broni,

I apparently was not too clear previously.

Yes, my Firefox browser has always opened immediately. But that little error message never appeared before I made Firefox my default browser. And it always manages to pop up just a millisecond before my browser opens.

The first time it happened, I thought uh-oh, Firefox isn't going to work, and then it opened right off. And it only happens if Firefox is not already open before I click on that link in the e-mail.

A real mystery, isn't it? LOL

Disable all Firefox add-ons, revert to default skin.
    Exit Firefox, and try again.

I don't use skins with anything, and my only add-on is my google toolbar. And since I have google toolbar in IE as well, I doubt that is my problem.

Try to disable Google toolbar. You don't have to uninstall it.

    You said:
Does it say Windows, or Firefox?

This is a direct quote, because I just used the reply I received when I clicked on the URL to bring me to your last response, and did not have any browser open.

    Windows cannot find
'http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=70836&goto=newpost'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

This is interesting, because it'd implicate, that the message comes from Windows Mail, rather, then Firefox. I'm not familiar with Windows Mail, but I'll try to dig something out.
