This white-haired grandma finally got brave enough to post my first message ever! But I've learned a bunch while reading posts to see if anyone else has the same problem. Hamburgerpatty's came the closest, but not quite.

Downloaded NS 7.02 from the NS website. Had NS 4.something before, which worked just fine. Have Win2000 and DSL. What else do you need to know?

When I try to open links from emails, shortcuts on my desktop (like my favorite weather site) and other web sites, I get the message "Windows cannot find netscape.exe." I've uninstalled and reinstalled it 3 times, to no avail.

Pasting in the address works OK, but that's a pain. Can anything be done?

    Keep instructions simple -- I'm a novice!

    Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum, kathy h!

    Hi Grandma Kathy!

Congratulations on your first BBS post, and we are honored that you selected this Forum for the event!

Netscape.exe is the executable for the NS4.7x browser. The executable for Netscape 7 is Netscp.exe. This is the file that actually opens, and/or executes the application. The extension is .exe, which means executable...

If Netscape 4.7 is still on your PC and registered as your default browser, then that's why you are receiving the pop up message. Windows is still looking for the netscape.exe which was for Netscape 4.7x. Did you uninstall Netscape 4.7x, and if so, did you uninstall 4.7x using the Add/Remove applet in the Control Panel.
    (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove)

To make Netscape 7 your default browser, open Netscape 7
Go to Edit | Prefences | Advanced
    Select: System
See the first Screen Shot on the below listed link

Then go to Edit | Prefences | Navigator
Select the same options as shown in the second Screen Shot.
Click HERE for the Screen Shots of the settings.

See this link for more details:
Setting Netscape 7 as the Default Browser

If you continue to have problems, you can always re-install Netscape 4.7, as it is a completely separate program from NS7. You probably should have just left NS4.7 around as a backup. I have both 4.79 and 7.02 on my system, in addition to Mozilla, Opera, and IE (which I never use). They all exist quite well together.

Did you try the shift+right click - Open with - netscp.exe?
That should work, as long as you make sure "Always use this program to open this type of file" is ticked when you do so.

    To do the above:
    With Netscape closed:
    Open Windows Explorer
    Browse to:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
    Find the Netscp.exe file
    Highlight the file
Hold down the shift key and right click with the mouse
    Select: "Open with "
In the list of Programs, scroll down to, and select "NETSCP "
    Place a tick beside
"Always use this program to open this type of file"

If you have more questions, please ask.

    Ramona

    What a white-haired wizard you are, Ramona!:D
I'm back in business, thanks to you! My desktop weather comes up, and I went all over the place, clicking on the links I hadn't been able to access for weeks! You wouldn't believe how many hours I've spent searching online and how many people I've talked to. And you had me back on track in 5 minutes Thanks a thousand times!! I'm recommending this site to all my white-haired friends!

A question about the screen shots check boxes: I went ahead and checked JPEG , GIF and BMP, even tho they weren't checked in the screen shot because we receive those types of files. Should I have? If I hadn't checked them, would those types of files be blocked?

To answer your other questions -- Yes, I did uninstall NS 4.7 using Add/Remove in control panel, but it still showed in the list of programs installed. I had tried to re-install it, but couldn't find how to do that - couldn't find it on line. Oh, well. That's a moot point now.

    Thanks again, Ramona.

    Hi Kathy,

I'm so glad you are up and running full steam!

A question about the screen shots check boxes: I went ahead and checked JPEG , GIF and BMP, even tho they weren't checked in the screen shot because we receive those types of files. Should I have?

My theory on this question, is why use a 12 MB application to open a tiny JPG, GIF, or BMP file? Seems like a lot of wasted resources. I use IrfanView Graphics Viewer, as do thousand of other users. IrfanView is a freeware application for viewing graphics. It's small, I make all my screen shots for my Show 'N Tell, with it, edit photo's, etc., etc., etc. I've been using it about 4 years, and it just keeps getting better and better. That's why I disable using Netscape for viewing the graphics files, other than HTML.

If I hadn't checked them, would those types of files be blocked?

No, they definitely wouldn't be blocked. Your offline viewing would open Netscape to view the file, however. As discussed in my above profound theory... ;)

All white haired Grandma's and Grandpa's most welcome on this Forum... There are surprisingly quite a few "mature" members on this Forum and on the BBS as a whole.

    Some download sites for Netscape:
    SillyDog701 Netscape Archive of Browsers
This site has every Version of Netscape Communicator and the new Netscape 7, both Streamline and Standalone.

Holger Metzger's Netscape 7 Compact Version

The Streamline, Standalone, and Compact Versions are much smaller than the official Netscape 32 MB Version. I always recommend the smaller SillyDog and Compact Versions, as they are only 12 - 14 MB.

    Netscape Communicator 4.xx Archives
