I had to re-install Windows 98. Now when it is booting up, it suddenly goes into DOS with a message that there is a problem with Windows Registry in System. INI re: Symantec/Symevnt-38
Something about a Device file. I've tried a lot of things on my own but no luck. I have deleted all Symantec files, but the same message appears. I have to press any key to continue the boot of 98.
Also after the boot is completed, a message appears that says " Invalid Back Web 7288971. I have to click on it to remove.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You have these files being called from the registry, as Shared Files, caused by a bad uninstall of a Norton product. You can reinstall the software and then uninstall it again.
    Or you can go to Start\Run, type in Regedit and press Enter. Navigate to this key;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDLLs
With that key highlighted, go to the tool bar at Registry\Export Registry File, give it a name and save it. This is the backup. You can double click it and the key will be restored as it was.
Now look to the right pane of Regedit, you will see lines with Symnatec or Norton, right click and delete them.

Go get Regcleaner, install and then run. When it opens, it will have a list of software installed and some that were uninstalled. Remove the Norton and Symnatec entries, go to the toolbar and Tools\Registry Cleaner\Do Them All. Remove all it finds, this program make backups of all removed.
Click on the tab labeled Startup List in Regcleaner, it will show a listing of what is starting up in windows, Remove the Backweb entries, it is an auto updater for software you have installed.
You might be interested in SpyBot Search & Destroy, as some versions of Backweb are spyware and doing nothing for you.

Registry in System. INI re: Symantec/Symevnt-38

I believe that file may actually be in the System.ini and not the registry.

Do a Start/run and type sysedit. and either delete the line or put a ; ( semi-colon ) in from of it.

    If you do indeed find that it is in the System.ini. When you get it cleaned out along with other stuff;

1--make sure that scanregistry is loading at bootup.
2-- DELETE ALL RB00X.CAB files in the C:\Windows\Sysbackup folder
3--Restart Windows and it should make a new RB00X.File.

If you do not do this and Windows has a mind to it can reuse an old reg backup and you will be right back where you started.

Any time you are editing the reg check to make sure that you do have the RB00X.CAB files first.

And check out how to use scanreg /restore from the command prompt at bootup.

And if they are not there find out WHY before going any further.

Forget Export/Import. And use the RB00X.CAB files. They do a better job as they contain all four files that make up the regisrty in Win98.

    Windows Boot Again

Thanks Mark and Billybob. I tried as best I could to follow your instructions, but the problem remains. Some suggestions I could not follow because I couldldn't find the file or program. I'm sure that no trail of Symantec or Norton remains. They are deleted.
I couldn't find RegCleaner. Here is the total message that I receive half way thru the Windows boot.

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application.
The Windows Registry or SYSTEM. IMI FILE REFERS TO THIS DEVICE FILE, BUT THE DEVICE FILE NO LONGER EXISTS.
    c:\Program~\Symantec\Symevnt.386

That is the total of the message. Then I have to srrike a key to continue the boot.

If you fell like taking another stab at helping me, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Larry

    Regcleaner

    Hi Again,
As soon as I had downloaded Regcleaner, I was told that my 30 day trial period was over and now I have to get a paid version.

Registry in System. INI re: Symantec/Symevnt-38

If that file ( or reference to it ) is not found in the registry then it is almost certain to be in the System.ini in the 386Enh section. I do not know where else it could be.

And even if it were in the registry and you removed it but it was in the system, ini it will get put back into the registry.

Also look for a POSSIBLE Symantec section of the System.ini. Norton does do some strange things sometimes.

    Go to Start\Run, type in Regedit and press Enter. This is going into the registry. Navigate to this key using the + signs in the left pane;

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr
    entVersion\SharedDLLs

With SharedDLLs highlighted, look to the right pane and you will see "c:\Program~\Symantec\Symevnt.386" in a line. Right click on that line and select Delete.

    Hi Again,
I tried both of the suggestions, but still no luck.
In the System.ini under 386 ther was no mention of Symantec or Norton. Could I delete all of 386 without a problem?

In the Regedit when I got to SharedDLLs, the right hand page listed hundreds of programs with numbers only. I went back to HKEY_Local _MACHINE\Software and found Symantec with about 10 files including Norton. I deleted all of that group, and thought that this is it. But low and behold, the same problem persists. There cannot be any Symantec or Norton files anywhere. They have been cleared out of Registry and System ini.

Should I re-install my Micron Operating System Recovery CD?

Thanks for trying hard to help me.

I believe that file may actually be in the System.ini and not the registry.

Man was I ever wrong there.

It should say the the file is being asked to load ( called ) from the System.ini.

The actuall file apparently does not exist. Therefore the error message.

Also look at the C:\Windows\Programs\Startup folder ( oops I gotta go fire up a 98 machine ) Good thing I looked :)

    Make that C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder.

This should also appear if you if you do a Start/Programs And show as a Startup Folder.

But anyway. Somewhere a call is being made to a file ( or files )that does not ( or do not ) exist.

That is what the error message is saying.

    Nope, you will have problems.
You may have missed it there, if you would have put the mouse cursor right on the dividing line at the top of the right pane between Name and Data, you could have moved it over and seen the entire path's. Or in Regedit, go to the toolbar at Edit\Find, type in "symevnt.vxd" and sit and wait for it to be found.
If it is found under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD, delete it from the left pane, and only that one.
Like BillyBob said, the reason the error is showing up is that is it being called and it isn't there.

Thanks guys, I'm going to try your suggestions. I did try to delete
symevnt.vxd. but it didn't show up. I'll try again.
I've worked four days on this problem but so far no luck.
I could mention some other problems that exist at the same time.
I've worked just as hard on Java, but it remains corrupted or isn't downloading properly.
Also the following message appears at the end of the Windows boot. Error-usage:restart<procid<pollPeriod>[poll1Period]<path TO TEST> {exe>[<peram>]]
Thanks again for hanging in there.

I was able to delete many symentec file from Shared DLLs where I could only find numbers before including symevnt.vxd. I thought that I really was in luck, so restarted Windows. Disgustingly, the darn dos message continues to appear. I have deleted that name symantec from every possible location that you have kindly suggested.

I forgot to mention that I accidently deleted all of 386. How much trouble am I in now?/
    Larry
PS-Any further suggestions? I really appreciate your help.

Thanks!! No more interruptions on Startup. Found Symevnt.386 still in Registry. Thought I had deleted that one long ago. All ok now.
