So i was running into troubles with xp freezing on me all the time. I've formatted my computer many times before so i figured i'd just do that. When i typed format it said that it can't run win32 programs in dos....i got another working copy put it on a disk and it did the same thing. Curiously all dos programs were like that except fdisk...i figured i could just delete the partition and make a new one. Well i did that and i have problems. i'm not so sure that i even have dos now because i can only use it if i have a boot disk or like in the drive and even then it doesn't work as it should. What should i do to fix this situation? I have a 350mhz dell desktop with 386 mb of ram.
    Thanks
    Stephen

Hi excalibur313 - Welcome to the Board :)

There is no DOS in XP, as you have discovered, just an emulator. I'm not quite sure what state your hard drive is in now but there are two possible courses of action....

Boot from a Win 98 Boot disk - if you don't have one get one here www.bootdisk.com - use fdisk to clear all the partitions and make a primary partition. You can format it here if you wish.

Then check in the BIOS that the boot order is set to CD-ROM > Floppy > HD and boot from your XP install CD - you do have one? and follow the on screen instructions.

Alternatively bypass fdisk and try a straight boot from the install CD.

If you have only a recovery disk boot from that and it will restore your computer to 'as delivered' state.

BTW Please follow Posting Rules #3 Meaningful Subject
