Is using the Windows automatic updating feature a good idea? I recently had to re-format my hard drive and did my updates. Now I have an icon in my taskbar, which asks me to turn this feature on. What do you all think?

    Thanks,
    Jeena

    Hello Jeena,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

I have it set to notify but do nothing else until I say so. I recommend that setting because it gives you some level of control. You can at least review the updates before accepting them.

Another factor is which connection you are on. On high speed broadband, updates are downloaded and installed in no time but not so on a dial up connection. If you get notified and know when Windows Update does its thing, you can at least let it finish and not disconnect in mid process.

The majority of the time, updates only come out on the second Tuesday of the month.

I manually check for updates the day after that. Found nine new ones today....
