Short of buying a program, is there a way to STOP windows/win-apps from adding to "new" and "startup" items without my permission? I am extremely tired of using TWEAK, and similar, to clear out absolutely stupid adders which are just clutter.

Usually not in advance of the install, but easy to stop unwanted startup items and context menu items using Regedit & Services Console.

Disable or set to manual any unwanted services using the Services Console. See http://www.blkviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htm to find out what's really needed and what's extraneous baggage.

(note: XP has an MSCONFIG that will work in win2k. http://www.thetechguide.com/downloads.html)

Use Regedit or MSCONFIG and delete the keys in right hand frame in these categories:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
