My PC currently runs windows 98 os.I have another PC which came shipped with windows 98se.I have tried to install the se version over windows 98 without success.I am advised during set up that installation cannot be completed because an operating system is already installed. Please advise as to how this might be resolved.

    windows se installation

    gklaw1 ,
with all of my problems with a "new" video card driver I am somewhat of an "expert" of installing Win 98
1)I believe that the installation process (setup) allows
you to install over the previously installed version. It is a warning
    only
    2) if not and if there is nothing that you need or cannot back up from your current hard drive- refomat your hard drive and
    reinstall Win 98
    3) at the beginning of setup it will ask you if you want to
end setup. Hit f3 twice. Then you will be at a d: prompt or d:\win98 prompt. Type format c: enter. You then be asked of course if you want to proceed.
If you are in the d: prompt you may have to change to
    d:\win98
After formatting the c: drive reboot and run setup. Using
the Win 98 cd it should start this after a reboot
if you run d: setup for some odd reason (perhaps someone
can explain to me) it will take you through the whole install process and then find several errors and... .
    reboot.
if you computer will not start up after reboot (error.. system disc) you should use a startup floppy disc.
to be on the safe side create one with Windows before
    formatting
you may have to go into your setup bios and change your
boot drive sequence to a: drive first (maybe)

    4) lastly there are several versions of Win 98 cds
    1)Win 98 original
    2) Win 98 se original
    3)Win 98 se upgrade
of course you cannot install Win 98 from a se upgrade disc

Lastly and someone can correct me if I am wrong. People
talk about Win 98 se as if it is a distinct product
my understanding after reading (and even a Win 98 book
about Win 98 said so) Win 98 orig when updated with the microsoft Windoze upgrades becomes the se.
the se is not a distinct product but essentially the upgraded
    product.
the options that you have are.
1)run 98 se full install fastest
2)run 98 orig install , then se intall, then update next fastest
3)run 98 orig install, then update fully. The absolute slowest. To complete and install the 98 update will take your
    speed demon an overnight process
my understanding is that all the processes will result in the same end.

    hope this helps

    3:rolleyes:

Try renaming win.com in your windows folder. Then install.

I have only seen that message when booting from the HD to do an install/re-install over top. Which I no longer try anyway.

When booting straight to a Floppy or CDROM from a power off state it would not know another OS was even present.

Just need to be carefull that you are going with the same or higher version.

    OOPS !!! I forgot.

With SE it depends on which version you have as to how you do things.

The SE FULL or UPGRADE can be done clean or overtop from a floppy boot.

But with the SE UPDATE version 98 FE muct be installed first.
