When I try to shut down Windows 98 , it just keeps rebooting. So in order to shut it down I have to turn off the power. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem and how to fix it.

    Thanks,
    Tar Heel

Does it get to the point right when it should shut off and instead reboots?
Do you have a PCI internal modem installed?
    or
Did this occur after just installing the PCI modem?
Remove modem, and boot and then shut down. If the problem goes away, put modem in anti static bag, and get an external serial port modem. You may choose a USB, but would rather have a serial port myself.

    Interesting.
Just as a test, give this a try:

Create a new shortcut on the desktop: Right click on the desktop,
    and choose New, Shortcut.

Use this(select and copy then paste) in the command line:

    C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1

Doubleclick on that shortcut ... does it shutdown ?

    Best

    HI,
    Would it be possible for you to try one more trick ? If so can you do the following and see if that will solve the issue you are having;
    Step 1: Go to Start
    Step 2: Programs
    Step 3: Accessories
    Step 4: System Tools
    Step 5: System Information
Step 6: On the window that appears, at the top click on tools
Step 7: Select System Configuration utility
    Step 8: Select general tab
    Step 9: Advanced
Step10: Check "disable fast shutdown "...then ok

    Keep us posted...
