On a fresh install of Win98SE on an old laptop, I can't seem to get Windows Update to work.

Every time when trying, I just get "Windows Update Error" and a list of places to complain to MS. The error # seems to be 0x80072F89.

I've not encountered this before; Windows Update always worked fine.

Any ideas what this problem could be or how to fix..?

From my experience, do the updates in small chunks. I think the mouse in the wheel that runs the MS servers gets tired sometimes :D
Select a few of the smaller downloads or just one of the larger ones at a time. Run them, reboot if necessary and go back for more.

Look for an update for the Updater

One thing I had problems there with is Java. Update your Java at the Sun Mircosystems website (although the IE update suggestion is what I would try first, check the version of IE, it might be 4.0).

I am currently doing a fresh Win98 install on one of my boxes, and encoutered the same problem.

The first thing I had to do, was manually obtain and install the IE6 SP1 update:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

The second was, set the date correctly [We're in 2007 now].

After that, it recognized the Windows Update service correctly, and it was clear sailling from then on.

    ------------

NOTE: The Windows Update service is still active for Win98 / Win98SE / WinMe, however since July 11, 2006, no futher updates have been added, as MS is no longer providing support for these systems.
