    hi

i was going through my add and remove programs dialouge and i removed a program called (something like) "xyedesdfdsf"

    anyway
i restarted my computer and it would go to the screen right after dos startup where windows splashscreen comes on and restarts.

i tried safemode and it says "windows file protection, you" and freezes.

i can only run ms-dos from the startup option "step by step config" and competeing no for each entry.

with this i cannot opperate my cdrom drive to reinstal windows. all i have is my floppy drive.

    help me please.

    thkx in advance,

all i have is my floppy drive.

That is all you need if you have a 98SE Startup disk and the 98SE CDROM.

But it may depend on what type of machine you have. If you one such as a Dell, HP or Compac then they may have a speciall recovery disk.

But if you have a home built and do have the Startu[ disk, boot to it.
at the A:\> prompt type [CDROM letter]\win98\setup.

    ie. S:\win98\setup

This will do a better job of reinstalling anyway because nothing from the HD or Windows will be loaded will get overwrittin properly.

Also watch CAREFULLY and make sure that Windows get reinstall to the C:\ Windows folder.

    Try this first.

xyedesdfdsf is not a normal application and is most likely a virus or trojan.

    From a DOS prompt, do
    SCANREG /Restore

Choose the date that you did the add/remove. (the backup would have been done on your first boot that day)

Go through the restart and see if it boots.

If it does, immediately update your virus defs and do a full system scan.

    And/or run this online one.

    Good idea.

I have added SCANREG.EXE to the Startup disk just for this purpose.

But now that you mention a possible Virus, an overtop re-install may not be the better thing to do. Unless the problem can be PERMANENTLY illiminated first.

AHHH !!?? Don't you need Windows and the Internet to get to HOUSECALL ? If he can get Windows started and get online I agree.

Yes. But my "presumption" is that the removal of this item has caused all of the above grief. So, hopefully the previous registry, even though the files are now gone, may get Windows started, and then get to the net.

And, hopefully silverhawk has an AV installed, with uptodate definitions, that they can then run.

After the registry restore, if you can't get to Windows, see if Safe mode is an option. And, if so, run your virus scan from there.

    If you have problems getting SCANREG to run;

Try booting to the Floppy and a the A:\> prompt type

    C:\windows\command\scanreg

    C:\Windows\command is where scanreg.exe resides.
