    Appreciate some assistance.

Friend has PC (Dell) with W98 first edition.

Is it possible to install W98 second edition (full version) over W98 first edition without losing whatever programs were installed?

    If so, how?

    Thanks for your help.

    Open Explorer, browse to c:\windows
    Rename win.com to win.bak
Insert the CD, do NOT restart the computer, and run setup.
When prompted, do NOT install to c:\windows.000
Select "Other ", and change it to c:\windows (remove the .000)

If you are wanting to upgrade in order to fix any existing problems ( especially hardware ) I would suggest a clean install.

With a DELL PC it may not be that easy. They may well have their own way of doing things.

Nope. Dell is one of the nicer ones. The 98 install is basic 98, with a few Dell bells and whistles added on is all. SE will go smoothly over top, unike PB, HP, and Compaq's neverending problems.
The only issue I have ever encountered on a Dell, was upgrading to SE with AOL installed. I have since learned, that you UNinstall AOL, do the upgrade, then reinstall AOL (if you really must).

Thanks for the replies and the info.

Owner of PC now wants to install WMe.

If this becomes the case, it will be a full install. Read of too many problems with Me upgrade.
