I have a couple of items in my control panel I just don't recognize, and would like to know how to remove them. Thank you. I run Windows 98. :)

KingG--Items in Control Panel are .cpl files. If you are sure you do not want them or do not want to see them, you can do a Find for *.cpl files, figure out which apply to the undesired items (or right click|Properties to see what function is involved), and then either rename (to xxx.old instead of xxx.cpl) or actually delete. I think I would try rename until you are absolutely sure you do not want the item.

If you don't recognize them, how do you know if you want or need them???? An icon in the control panel is put there for a reason, usually to adjust options and settings in a particular component that may not be available by any other means or will not stick when using the options/settings in the actually software/hardware.

You can't use or take advantage of something that you do not know exists or have disabled when it should be there. Find out what the icons do and where they came from before deciding you don't want the cpl available in the control panel.

    That being said....
Tweakui has a handy tab or setting (depending on the version of tweakui you use) that will allow you to show or hide these cpl's at your whim. Just remember that you have used this for some cpl's. If you run into a computer problem and ask for community board assistance or a support site assistance, you may recieve directions that include using one of these cpl's. If you have hidden it and forgoten about it, they and yourself may be left with the added steps and/or confusion while trying to figure this out.

Best advice has been given Ignore Them. I only add... Ignore them but only after finding out what they do and control.

Back again..(I just can't seem to stop shaking the "finger of TLC" at you, can I??? :) )
As a beginner, unless your fond of learning your lessons the hard way ie; the "school of hard knocks" and "personal experience's best avoided ", use your help files, online search engine of choice, or post an icon function question here. Do not make changes in these unless you thoroughly understand what you are doing and how to reverse it. If curious you can peek into them and exit or cancel out without making changes, but use caution, thought and carefulness while doing so unless your eager to learn a lesson in the manner I have previously described.... :)

The advice you write was also given to me YEARS ago. I chose to IGNORE it and wound up in the very educational, learn quickly what not to do-
My mess up required a re-install of 98. ( I deleted the WRONG file. ) there are so many files that are named almost the same that it is VERY EASY to get the wrong one.
