    Hello,

I finally decided to clean up my old Windows 98 hard drive by reformatting and reinstalling from my Windows 98 CD. No problem there, all went smoothly. I then went on-line to the MS Windows update site and installed everything that it wanted me to update. However, when I went to install the new MS Media Player, or a couple of other update programs I have found on-line, I have gotten the mesage that instalation could not happen because I don't have Windows 98 SE. Now before I reformatted my HD, on my old Win 98, upgraded gradually over the years, these programs identified my OS as being Win 98 SE and installed fine. Anyone have a clue how mo make the world think my OS is SE? The Win 98 Service pack 1 (which is esentially the SE update)seems to no longer be available as such.
    Thanks!
    Ken

That Svc Pack is FAR from being SE. I used it myself and it was NOT the same as SE itself is. It is only a sort of upgrade that don't upgrade too much. But it is still 98 FE as far as the system goes. SE is by far better.

As far as I know the only way to make your system see SE is to install SE.

Which media player did you try to install ? Media Player 6.4 should work just fine. Anything above may require SE.

Sny version of media Player will run on win98, including WMP9, the newest version.

The win98 updates are still readily available. The basic difference betwen win98 with updates and win98SE is that SE has ICS (internet connection sharing) and some hardware requires SE drivers rather than win98 drivers. That's about it.

Win98 is by far more stable and less buggy than 98SE. SE is noted for the famous shut down issues whereas 98 is almost void of such problems. This is due to anumber of different causes, most notably driver issues in 98SE.

After installing the 98 updates, it would be best to upgrade to IE5.01SP2 or IE 5.5 PRIOR to installing any newer version of Media Player.

Here are the 98FE update to bring your 98 "almost" to 98SE:

I find it to be just the opposite.

It may ( and did for me ) make a HUGH difference in which version of SE is used.

At first I used the SE UPDATE $20 version. I can not print what I though of it.

I then went to the UPGRADE $89 version, put in in CLEAN and things could not be better.

I have had IE and Media player problems but they were IE & WMP related not the OS.

As to drivers and SE. With the UPDATE version I could run nothing but the drivers that shipped with it. Video, Audio and Mouse.

With the UPGRADE I can use OEM drivers for everything. Except when I got stupidly careless and tried to use ME Video drivers. But that was OPERATOR error not Operating System error. Not easy to fix either. But I had also made another OPERATOR error. I had not installed the MB drivers FIRST as soon as I got SE installed.

And shutdown problems I have had none. There is a patch that adds a 4sec delay that fixed it for me. That one shutdown problem that I did have was caused by NAV checking the floppy on the way down. Disabled that and all is well.

That's correct GBB, I should have clarified my post re SE.

My wife has an OEM system with SE and it is sometimes buggy, still have not been able to locate the cause of the shutdown issue, but it's not a big deal because it's always on anyway!

My 98FE is going strong since it was first installed when we built this computer.

As for Operator Error, well that's the main reason any system has troubles!
