Do I need to run EMET in Win 8 or are most of the security features inbuilt in OS ?

Hi rsinfo. According to the system requirements for EMET:

It doesn't look like EMET is supported on Windows 8. However according to this page it looks like EMET 3.0 works on Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

I've never used EMET but if Microsoft tested it on Windows 8 Consumer Preview then you can try installing it on Windows 8.

    No, you don't need to.

I don't see the need to use it on any Windows operating system of mine, I live dangerously! But EMET can be invaluable and such precautions should be taken when necesary.

Don't agree with you Tony. EMET can protect individual programs along with the OS. The OS may be patched but everything can have security holes. [Java & Flash come to mind immediately]. Any increase in security is worth it, I suppose.

That's just my personal opinion. I agree that the average user should take all precautions available. (post above edited)

But how can I protect the apps & programs then ?

In WinXP & 7, I used EMET to protect Firefox, Flash player, Java, Adobe Reader & other programs. How can I do that in Win 8 ?

One of the reasons is because the mitigations offered by EMET have the potential to break applications. Some applications rely on exactly the behavior that the mitigations block.

Makes sense but MS can take a separate route. It can ask at the time of program installation for EMET protection or look it up in a database. Would save many [computer] lives .

An online database which the OS could query to know what options the program supports or does not support. Much like firewalls which know what ports to open for which program.

If there is an online database to query, maybe Grandma wouldn't have to do a thing.

Who is going to do (and pay for) this EMET testing, and then build/maintain this "online database" of precisely what does and does not work? The sheer number of all the possible combinations of all available hardware and software -- including the various versions of both -- would be astronomical. And to top that off, more of each are being released hourly. Around the globe. And those items now need to be tested on everything that has already been tested.
