Need advice on how to complete Windows Update on my 8.1 computer it has been stuck on update 24 of 29 all night.
Computer is win 8.1 64 bit 250GB SSD and 3GB WD Desktop.
Haven't had stuck updates before so I don't know the correct way to resolve this without doing more harm than good.
I have Googled and some suggest turning off the Internet before using the power button to turn off the computer.
    Advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill, have you shut down the comp yet? Is the comp doing anything or is it frozen? Neil.

    Hi Neil,
No I have left it, it is not frozen, it is just stuck on update 24 of 29 with the little thingy still turning and showing the usual:
"Keep Your PC On Until This Is Done Update 24 Of 29 "
Haven't had that happen to me before, so I don't really know what to do without stuffing things up.

If nothing has happened for several hours, I would shut down by holding Start button for 5-6 seconds and leave comp for a few minutes - then Reboot. It should act like a power outage and resume it's job - like an Internet drop out.
If you're using W10, I think its robust enough to handle any of those occurrences.
It should at worst abort install and start again.
Have you looked in Task Manager > Right click clear area of Task bar. Neil.

It is Win 8.1 and it is stuck on the dark blue screen with the writing that I mentioned in white in the center of the screen.
Task-bar is not available in that situation
    Cheers
    Bill

Use Keyboard Shortcut - Ctrl + Shift + Esc to bring up the task manager. Then see what is going on with the update.

I would still hard shutdown as Task Manager will probably say WU is not responding. Neil.

Thank you Neil & Mr Bill
I went out for an hour or so and when I returned my comp had shut down, it completed the update after 15 odd hours.
When I booted up it only had to finish the update just a few seconds and all is back to normal now.
    Thanks again

It came back as if nothing had happened, automatically shut down, since I had set the comp to "Shut down after finishing Update" before I went to bed, 15 odd hours later it shut down, after booting up it read finishing updates as usual for a few seconds, ready to log in.
All good, no computer had a serious malfunction or anything, guess it just took it's time.
