Recently my emachines d525 with windows 7 wouldn't boot up.
I've tried to run a copy of the recovery cd I made. I have also tried using a copy from other sites that are available for download.
After the cd starts up it asks if I want to install in english. Then it proceeds and stalls and it seems to sit and nothing happens after.
I have used a usb stick and boot Ubuntu 11.04, and I can access all the files and am able to see the Emachines partition, the System Restore partition, and another unknown partition of 13G.
I don't know what else to use now that I've gotten this far.
I have a virus check for Ubuntu but cant use it on the windows partition, I think I have the wrong one.
    Thanks.

Try running Seatools to test your HD (assuming the D525 is the same as listed in your specs).

Great, How does it work? I've looked around for an explanation but can't seem to find one. Or rather, how do I use it when the system won't boot. Should I use the SeaTools for Dos?

    It's in the link

Try looking at "See the Tutorial" & "Learn More ". FWIW you want SeaTools for Dos.

Ok, I used Seatools for Dos. SMART is enabled and working, SMART is NOT tripped. DST is supported. Logging Feature Set is supported. I have also initiated the long test. At this point I'm assuming it's not the hard drive.

Bad News...SeaTools short test and long test fail. And after running ubuntu one more time, I can't access the windows folders.
It says something about error mounting, the NTFS volume is exclusively opened already. Hmmm......

Sounds like your HD has kicked the bucket mate.

You may still be able to mount the drive in ubuntu to salvage some data, but you'd be better asking in a ubuntu forum (eg Ubuntu Forums) for further assistance.

    Thanks, Wildfire.
If I remember right, this is the second time this hard drive has acted up.
I hooked it up to a Desk Top PC, and tried to recover there in case of motherboard failure.
After giving up for some weeks it miraculously came back to life, though I can't remember what I tried or did.
This is on a laptop that gets abused by being left on overnight and heats up, which I know doesn't help.
Feels like the springs and bolts came flying out of it now!
    thanks...Woody:)

If it's failed before then likelyhood is it will fail again...

Personally even if I can recover a failed drive I would never trust it with critical data. If a drive fails it's always best to replace it.

Troubleshooting aside, it sounds like a time for a fresh reinstall.

The Recovery CD used in post #1 is a fresh reinstall CivicStylesz98.

The fact that the Hard drive is failing the manufacturers diagnostics and has failed previously is a clear indication of the problem.

I can see the boot partition, two unknown smaller partitions, but the operating system partition is referred to as unknown, which also has personal files. I can see the partitions with hirens boot cd. Is there any kind of virus that would change something so drastically? I can't even scan it since it can't be identified. The recovery CD as i said won't go beyond loading after choosing the language.

    Further discussion is pretty useless:

The disk is FUBAR, so get a new one!
