I am getting an error when attempting to perform Windows Update

"Windows could not search for new updates Code 80004002 "

I have tried many different things including several Microsoft Fixits and I can get nowhere.

Can someone please help me resolve this issue?

    Thanks,

    Pops

Thanks for your reply Evan. I tried Option 3 as you suggested but that did not fix the problem. I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2013. What do you suggest now?

I have tried the clean boot and no success. I have also run a CHKDSK and a SCANNOW, neither of which found anything. As I indicated in the original post, I have also tried a number of Microsoft Fixits based on other forum input. All of this has failed to change the results. Oh yea, I also have done a very thorough virus scan with both Kaspersky and Malware Bytes. Nothing found there either.

What has me most baffled is that things were sailing along very well and no changes were made to the system. I went out and check for updates and the problem was there. Obviously something changed, but what. Also, I ahve Updates set to update automatically now, yet when I go into Windows Update, I see a red message that says " check for updates on your computer Always install the latest updates to enhance your computers security and performance ". I then have to click again on Check for Updates. This is different behavior from before where clicking on Windows Update automatically started the check for updates.

Does that shed any different light?

I ran the Fixit and it comes back with a message "This Microsoft Fixit failed to process "

I also tried reinstalling a Windows Update Client and it gives me a message "Windows Update Agent Installer encountered unrecoverable error "

Have you tried running System Restore and restoring your computer to a point before this error message started happening?

I" have not tried that yet. I was hoping to avoid that as I had updated lots of drivers etc. since then. Also, before this message started I was having an issue with two updates that kept installing each time I checked on Updates. So if I restore to an earlier time that will come back. . . how would I resolve that?

That behavior with the updates being offered to you repeatedly is much easier to identify and resolve than this error message that you are dealing with now. I would go ahead and perform the System Restore.

I attempted the restore, but it fails. "The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers ". I have no idea on this. Attached is a screen shot of the error:confused:

Thanks all for your help but I went a different direction. After 3 days of trying to fix this, and with every turn finding more and more errors, and the fact I just couldn't afford to be down come Monday morning, I formatted my drive and started over. Painful, yes, but I" will start doing full system backups at least weekly so that this can't happen again. System Restore did not work and I did have a full system backup that was a few weeks old, but it too had the Windows Update problem and that was the tipping point for me.

Thanks for all your help, I think you guys are the ebst!

Sorry that we couldn't get your issue resolved, but since your computer had so many problems then I think it was best that you performed a clean installation of Windows 7.

Since you did a clean install of Windows did you make sure to install all the drivers for your hardware as well as installing all of the Windows Updates?
