I have an Acer Extensa 4420-5910 with ATI Radeon X1250 graphics card. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit from Vista and every time I close the laptop and open it I get white horizontal lines across the display screen. I also get a message that states Catalyst Converter Host has stopped working everytime I turn the computer on. I have downloaded and installed the drivers from the Acer website, but no change. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try the driver from ATI.com site. That may fix your problem.

white horizontal lines on screen display

I have already downloaded it, twice! The download is not just a driver it is the catalyist control center. The white lines only appear if I close my laptop and reopen it. To get rid of the lines, I have to restart. Any other ideas?

What setting do you have under Power Options for 'When I close the lid'?

Sleep mode when lid is closed. I keep getting a message that the "Catalyst Control Host" has stopped working. I cannot access the control host controls. I have an ati radeon X1250 graphics card, AMD Turion 64 x2. Running Windows 64 bit. Previous os was Vista did not have this issue. Thank you.

OK - had it been Hibernate it may have pointed to a particular problem.

I checked out the Acer website for Extensa 4420 drivers for 7 Ult x64 and they do not offer any, noting that .....
so I wonder which driver you downloaded from Acer?

The ATI link I provided above also gives no Windows 7 drivers so it would seem that the necessary drivers are included in Windows 7 as indicated on the Acer website.

I suggest you uninstall the ATI Catalyst Control Centre and reboot and let Windows load the inbuilt drivers and see if the issue remains.

If you put the laptop to sleep without closing the lid, i.e. by pressing the sleep button on the keyboard, do you still see the horizontal white lines?

Just leave the lid open, leave the notebook idle it will enter the sleep mode automatically.

If I leave the laptop screen up it I do not get the white horizontal lines across the display. If I press Fn + F4 I DO get the horizontal white lines.

Does the computer go into Sleep mode after a period of time without any white lines?
Do the white lines persist when the computer is woken up? I guess so referring to your original post.

I may have found something relevant .....

    Windows 7 64 Bit Driver issues Radeon x1250 ....
    Sound familiar?

The solution for that thread was to update the BIOS. The only BIOS shown for your Acer is dated 2008 - long before Windows 7 was released so I would pass on that.

    Another thread .....

Windows 7 64-Bit Issue - Return from Sleep

Long and involved with some folk finding a solution and others not.

Have you tried contacting Acer support - there is no clear cut answer to your issue.

I contacted Acer and they told me my warranty expired February 2010. They won't say anything more.

I need to retrack my previous statement: when I leave the laptop screen open and come back to it the display re-appears with a ton of white horizontal lines.

By default the laptop will sleep in 15 minutes (I think) unless you changed the setting under Power Options.

That confirms that it is a problem with Sleep and not a mechanical problem occasioned by physically moving the lid.

My suggestion of posting on the forum for which I gave the URL above remains.
