I have a Windows 7 32bit. Windows update tells me the update kb976932 is available, but will not download. I manually download the update and attempted to install. Install fails with error 80073701.

I have tried various options to install including: clean boot, safemode, and etc. No success with any of the above.

As a side note: explore 9 will not install either, not sure if that is relevant.

    Any help would be appreciate.

    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

Has KB976902 been installed? It's a prerequisite for installing Service Packs on Windows 7.

    Yes, kb976902 is installed.

After another attempt to install Service Pack #1, I get the following message: "the reference assembly could not be found. ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING(0X80073701)"

I searched this error but didn't find much help.

    Solution:

I found a solution for my system. Since no search results seemed to point to a solution or those pointed to were of no use, I tried the Inplace-Upgrade for Windows 7. Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099

This process took several hours, but I got a new cleaned up install with all updates installed including SP#1 (kb976932).
