Windows 7 random freeze ups

I read some other posts about random freezes, but none match mine. Lenovo T60 laptop, 2gb ram, ATI video. At least 6 times a day it shows massive hard drive activity, and is primarily frozen (save for the mouse pointer sometimes). After about 3 to 5 minutes it returns to normal. If I am online in a game environment, it always disconnects me. I have seen mulitple posts on the web about this, some on Microsofts own Technet site, but no solutions.
Any wisdom out there for me? Any help is greatly appreciated.
