I have some very strange behavior going on. I have an Asus laptop running Windows 7. Recently, most mornings when I come to it, it has powered off, even though the power settings say never to do that when plugged into AC.

I reboot and sometimes the system will run for most of the day with no issues and then suddenly freezes. No error messages, it just freezes. Other times after a reboot it will freeze within a few minutes and I have to reboot again.

I have tried a system restore to a point of several days ago but the issue prevails.

I have also tried running the repair system option and it reports back that it found no errors.

I have run a virus check twice using Kaspersky and Malware Bytes. They both report a clean system.

I have run Seatools on the hard drive and it reports no problems.

As a matter of record, I did a fresh system install about 2 months ago.

I need help in diagnosing what is going on. I am unfamiliar with Windows from a perspective if there would be any logs that might capture events that might cause this.

Can someone please help guide me through how to figure this out? I will be forever grateful!

Could possibly be overheating. What model Asus laptop is it. It may have an access panel to the heatsink/fan for easy cleaning.

agree with the above.. but most times, you would see a bios dump message stating an overheat problem.. If you can afford it. buy a cheap laptop cooler (plug it into a USB port) and run it and see it still crashes

Thanks for both replies. It is an Asus K72J and it already sits on a 2 fan laptop cooler.

Hmm...I guess it could still be a overheating problem but check your event messages and see if there is a clue in there.

That's the part I was referencing in my original post. I do not know how to get to that info. Can you let me know how to do that?

Pops, click on Start Menu > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

In the left pane, click on Windows Logs and then you will see a list of events that may be of help to you. I am not an expert in this area of Windows, but I am sure that some of he others can be of service if you find a list of errors in the log.

EDIT: You beat me to it, Bill. ;)

I am finally back. I decided to wait for the next crash and then capture what was in the log. So it finally crashed today, twice so far. I found a Critical Error right at the time of the crash and that is what I have copied and pasted below. Any ideas?

Heres a better idea just to get a crash code

On your desktop, (assuming you have the my computer icon) right click on the "my computer" icon. On the menu flyout left click on "manage ". YOu might get a User account control dialog box asking for permission to make changes to your machine. Click oK. On the menu left click on 'event viewer "
Left click on the little triangle pointing to "event viewer" There will be about three categories under that. Left click on the little triangle that is pointing to
windows logs. Left click on 'system" on the right side you will see a box under actions that says 'filter current log" click on that puppy. Under the filter current log dialog box, fill in the box that sez "error ".. Left click on OK.. now you will see all hard core errors that happened in your machine. Stay in the general tab area and double click a couple copy and paste them in your response

And it runs OK in safe mode? For a long time?
