Is there a way to find the product key on my computer - is it stored anywhere?

Bill advised you on two tools which will find the key. If you follow the link to Belarc Advisor, download the installer and run it. It will create a profile of your computer and under "software licenses" the key will be shown.

If you want to know the location in the operating system where it is stored, I can't tell but I assume it is in a registry key.

If you follow the links included, you will see they are programs.

Pretty sure it is registry somewhere but I actually think it is encrypted. At least I cannot find mine by searching the Registry.

Not necessarily. It depends on who assembled the computer and installed Windows, and if that is the original installation of Windows 7.

As your own link points out, that is for store bought, factory made computers that came with Windows 7 preinstalled. At this point, we know nothing about this computer or if home made or custom made locally. It might also have originally came with XP or Vista installed on it, and was later upgraded to Windows 7.

Very true Bill. This is only viable if the computer is factory built. I only posted this because it had not been noted. Shows how important full information is in order to be able to give full information to those asking the questions. We really know nothing so all replies are simply guesses by those hoping to offer assistance.

Again, not necessarily. If you build your own computers, or have someone local custom build one for you, and you or them as the "System Builder" install an OEM Windows license, you are supposed to attach that sticker as described. Now most shops who do custom builds will do that. But many home/self builders don't.

So if someone else built your computer (almost always the case for notebooks) there should be a sticker so it is worth looking for it.

I am not here to argue and I personally know all that you have said. I was and am speaking only to this particular user who asked the question. All I ask is people give 100% full information on their particular computer for which they ask the question. This user gave no information with the question. We don't even know what operating system is being used because according to his personal information he is using Vista though the question was posted in Windows 7 forum. So which is being used, Vista or Windows 7?

Not arguing either - sorry if it seems so. I am just saying we cannot assume anything - especially when we have so little information to go on.
I certainly agree 100% with this. Providing as much information about the computer, operating system and problem in the opening posts helps everyone get on the same page right out the gate. But most importantly, it usually helps the OPs get their answers faster as there are no delays asking for and waiting for all the information needed to define the problem, and provide an applicable solution - without having to make assumptions.
