Hello all. Recently I loaded Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit on to a new machine as a new install. I built the computer from ground up and everything is new. I have built other machines in the past but this is the first with Win 7. Initally I set the DVD drive as the boot drive. I installed from DVD R/W with no problems. On reboot after instalation I reset the HD as the boot drive. I continued with the reboot and received a blank screen with blnking curser in upper left hand corner. I rebooted several times and received the same results. On one of the next reboots I sellected F8 which gave me selections of which drive to boot from (BIOS is set to SATA 1). I chose the DVD R/W and the machine booted with no problems. Everything works fine except I have to boot from the install disk in the DVD R/W. I have searched through the postings here and other places on the net and havn't found anything that quite discribes this problem. The HDD was new and unused (no prervious OS). I ran startup repair about five times and no problems were found. Still needs install disk to boot. I have done MS updates on the system and everything else works just fine. Here is what I'm runnung: CPU-AMD Athlon II X2 270 processor, MB-ASUSTek M5A88-V EVO, mem- 16 GB, Graphics-ATI Radeon HD 4250, HD- ST1000DM003-9YN162 ATA DEVICE.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

    dutch

Unless you have other sata drives the bios should be set to sata 0 or hard drive, not sata 1.

Thanks for the reply TonyT. I just checked out the BIOS and there doesn't seem to be anyway to reset the HD from 1 to 0. Please advise.

    Thanks,

Hi dutch. Is the harddrive set in the BIOS to IDE or AHCI mode?

    Try this:

    1. Boot from the Windows 7 DVD
    2. Click Next
    3. Click the Repair your computer link
    4. Choose the Command Prompt option in the System Recovery Options window
    5. When the Command Prompt window opens type the following commands, exactly as written below, in the order in which they are presented, and press enter after entering each command

    • Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    • ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    • Bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd
    • BootRec.exe /fixmbr
    • BootRec.exe /fixboot
    • exit
If you receive any warnings or notifications asking you are you sure press Y. After exiting the Command Prompt window, reboot the computer and see if you can now boot the machine without the Windows 7 DVD.

Thanks Evan Omo for the reply. After reading TonyT's reply I had another look at the BIOS. I didn't notice the choices for IDE, ACHI and RAID eairlier. Default was set to IDE. Sooo I selected ACHI mode for SATA 1-4. Of course this messed things up real good. After several restarts and attemped repairs I just went ahead and reinstalled WIN 7. Everything seems to work correctly now. Before all this I tried Easy BCD and what it was doing looks like the commands you have in your post. Nothing helped. Thanks again for your reply and thanks to TonyT for causing me to take a second look at the BIOS.
