    Windows 7 Home or Premium

Ok for digital audio workstation use which would be more advantageous? There will be very little networking use, only rarely will it go on the web for updates etc.

I would like to run the XP virtual mode in Pro although it is absolutely not necessary. Can a Core 2 duo on an Asus p5b-vm se run virtual mode?

Hi desertbluesman. When you say Windows 7 Home are you talking about comparing Windows 7 Basic vs. Windows 7 Home Premium?

Don't even consider Windows 7 Home Basic. Windows 7 Home Premium will be fine for your needs. If you want to save money then instead of using Windows XP Mode with Windows 7 Professional why not use Virtual Box and install your copy of Windows XP on that VM.

What model of Intel Core 2 Duo is the computer running?

You may be able to run Windows XP in a VM on that processor but it won't run very well since that chip is very low end.

My situation is similar enough to warrant tagging along this thread.

Just got a new computer (custom built) and was thinking of giving my old box to my 96 yr old father-in-law. His needs are only for browsing, email and playing CD's.... literally.

My old box is based upon the Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe (socket 939) mobo, Opteron 165 dual core O.C'd to 2.62GHz@290MHz, 2Gb of RAM and a 250GB HDD.

Can I use this box to set him up for Windows 7 Pro, Chrome and Thunderbird?

    Thanks, Lar

That's great, Thanks! Would upping the RAM be of any benefit.

Hi Larry. If you will be migrating to Windows 7 then yes upgrading to 4 GB's of RAM if your motherboard can handle it will improve the performance of your machine.

Run the Crucial System Scanner to see if you can install more RAM in that machine.

    I agree with Evan.

4 GB of RAM would be the minimum on Windows 7 in my opinion.

I checked the mobo manual and it does support up to 4Gb of DR400/333/266. I just need to pick up another pair of 1gb DIMMs for the other 2 slots. Try to have them match the existing 2x1gb DIMMs. Thanks!!!

Let me ask a related question.

With my specs, lets say with 4Gb of RAM (the missing 2x1Gb DIMMs are on the way), which will run better in both the short and long run, XP Pro with all the updates, or Win7 Pro?

I ask because I just did a clean reinstall of XP with all the updates and it is by no means the rocketship it was when I first installed it years ago. I have to assume that that is because of all the updates (as I have always suspected).

Thanks. I found it interesting but I wish it were more current (2009). I think that its findings giving Win7 a slight edge indicates that over time and 4 years of additional updates, the spread between the two may have widened. Of course, Win 7 was getting updates during that period, too.

I guess I will try out the re-install first and go from there.
