[Resolved] Windows 7 freezes, bootup problems and missing partition D:

The thread I originally created, explaining my problems at greater depth.
http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-7/99004-win7-freezes-startup-missing-partition.html

I followed all the instructions but I have little to post after that sadly.. So I'm sorry for not providing much useful information here, but I'm really desperate here...

*I installed Avira antivirus and tried scanning the computer. It stops scanning on c: after "Scanning the registry" Last object -> Master Boot Sector HD0 ". Scanned files: 16
And stops on Boot Sections in my other partitions, except the partition missing, where it claims to have completed the search after scanning 12 files. (I know there should be several thousand files on D: as I have quite a lot of games installed there)

Step 1:
I installed it and it updated... somewhat. It got to 100% downloaded and then froze. I tried starting it, and then my computer froze. I uninstalled it and installed it again. It froze on 100% downloaded again and when I start it now, nothing happens.
So I can't get any logs out...

Step 2:
I am unable to turn off Avira at this point. I get the message that I don't have permission to do it. So I tried running it with Avira on in the background with no internet (unplugged the cable).
It freezes after quick scanning on startup, here:
SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\DAUpdateSvc
Then the whole window greys out and I can't click anything, then it's "not responding ".
Whatever program I use that tries to get info from the D: partition freezes, so I think that's the problem here, as DA (dragon age) is installed in D: together with all my other games.

Step 3:

Finally a log! :D

Step 4:
DDS isn't able to do anything. I think it might be blocked by Avira, or whatever else is screwing up my PC..

Step 5:
Well, here I am...

Any advice or pointers at all here would be most appreciated.
I've never had a problem this severe before, and I'm completely lost...

Thank you for reading this :)

Welcome aboard :)

Please, observe following rules:
• Read all of my instructions very carefully. Your mistakes during cleaning process may have very serious consequences, like unbootable computer.
• If you're stuck, or you're not sure about certain step, always ask before doing anything else.
• Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those I suggest.
• Never run more than one scan at a time.
• Keep updating me regarding your computer behavior, good, or bad.
• The cleaning process, once started, has to be completed. Even if your computer appears to act better, it may still be infected. Once the computer is totally clean, I'll certainly let you know.
• If you leave the topic without explanation in the middle of a cleaning process, you may not be eligible to receive any more help in malware removal forum.
• I close my topics if you have not replied in 5 days. If you need more time, simply let me know. If I closed your topic and you need it to be reopened, simply PM me.

====================================================

Download aswMBR to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.
Click the "Scan" button to start scan:

Thank you for your fast reply :)

I am no longer able to boot in normal mode and the internet doesn't work anymore. Last night I tried to copy classpnp.sys from my laptop (which is working perfectly) to the stationary (the one with all the issues), but I got the message that I don't have permission to do so. I only have one user on the computer, and it has administrator rights... Not gonna do anything else weird now unless you tell me to. I'm having nightmares about the computer now, so I'm just gonna let it rest and see if you're able to help me first :)
EDIT: When making new files on the computer, I have to manually refresh (F5) to see the files. Don't know if it helps to know that, but I thought I'd mention it anyways.

At least I was able to successfully run your program!
Here's the log:

Our instructions clearly say not to do anything else, but follow my instructions.
There is nothing wrong with that file, or your MBR.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
2. Close any open browsers.
3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
• Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
• Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
• Close any open browsers.
• WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
• Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
• If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
**Note 2 for AVG users: ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus. This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results ". Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
Use AppRemover to uninstall it: http://www.appremover.com/
We can reinstall it when we're done with CF.
**Note 3: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion ", restart computer to fix the issue.

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NOTE.
If, for some reason, Combofix refuses to run, try one of the following:
1. Run Combofix from Safe Mode.
2. Delete Combofix file, download fresh one, but rename combofix.exe to yourname.exe BEFORE saving it to your desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.
Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Rkill.com
Rkill.scr
Rkill.exe
• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
• If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
• A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
• If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
• If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
• Do not reboot until instructed.
• If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Once you've gotten one of them to run, immediately run your_name.exe by double clicking on it.
If normal mode still doesn't work, run BOTH tools from safe mode.
In case #2, please post BOTH logs, rKill and Combofix.
DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!
I am still unable to shut off or deactivate Avira, as I get the message that I don't have permission to do so.
I tried running ComboFix in normal mode with Avira on (no choice), and it froze when trying to create a restore point. I had it on for 2h before I canceled the process and tried in Safe Mode.
There it froze right away during "please wait. Combofix prepares to run" or something like that (I got it in Norwegian for some reason, so I translated it to English...)
I went back to normal mode, used rkill, and got this log:
Then I used ComboFix again and it froze at "please wait. Combofix prepares to run" again. I let it wait for almost one hour before giving up.
I tried it in Safe Mode and got an identical log from rkill, with only different time stamps, and then I ran combofix immediately after it finished and it's still stuck on "preparing to run" after waiting 30min.
Nothing new to report so far, good or bad.
Thank you for helping :)
Download TDSSKiller and save it to your desktop.
• Extract (unzip) its contents to your desktop.
• Open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.
• If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.
• If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
• It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.
• If no reboot is require, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
• If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory (usually C:\ folder) in the form of TDSSKiller_xxxx_log.txt. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
I've let the scan run from 07:55 untill 09:16, then cancelled because it didnt make any progress.
EDIT: I tried scanning both options first, when it failed to make progress (not 1 file scanned within 30sec or so), I tried only scanning services and Drivers. It didn't make any progress, so I tried scanning only the Boot Sectors, then it completed within a matter of seconds. Then I tried a full scan again and just left it on (from 7:55-9:15-ish) for my bf to post about the progress as I had to go to work. ( I was in a rush this morning)
Figured I should give all the info I can, so I went back to add the info to his post.
• Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
• When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows: OTL.txt and Extras.txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
• Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them back here.
I tried running OTL now in normal mode, with the instructions you gave.
It stops searching right away when it gets to "Getting Drive Info..." then after a few minutes the program isn't responding. No logs are created.
I tried starting in safe mode to see if it got any further there, but it stops at "Getting Drive Info..." as well.
I managed to turn off Avira now at least. had to go to "Services..." from the Task Manager and disable the automatic startup of avira (yay! had permission to do that! "), so now it doesn't start when I boot, and I don't have to get the "access denied" message. So now it won't be interfering with any programs if it has already. (I don't think it has, but it's nice to know for sure that it won't from now on).
Thanks again for still helping <3 I wish I could give you more logs...
EDIT:
I don't think I mentioned it earlier, and it might be of help; my computer is unable to shut off properly. it gets stuck at "shutting down ". So I have to turn it off with the O/I button >.<
Please, try to run OTL without any custom script.
Just click on "Quick scan" button.
Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.
Please download OTLPE (filesize 120,9 MB)
• When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
• Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
• Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
• Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
• Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
• Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
• When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
• When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
• Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
• OTL should now start.
• Press Run Scan to start the scan.
• When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
• Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
• Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.
I had to borrow my neighbor's computer to burn the CD, as my laptop has a malfunctioning one, and the stationary with all the issues froze when searching for the ROM. I ran the OTLPENet.exe-CD on the stationary and it froze on "Boot from CD-ROM" thing... So no logs or anything.
My neighbor turned out to do this for a living (fixing computers like this), I thought he was a regular programmer, so he advised me to run a Western Digital Data Lifeguard CD on bootup to see if there's anything wrong physically with the HD, just to narrow it down.
I ran it through the night (took about 2h), and it fixed a few errors on the HD and now everything works perfectly again! I got my D: back, it takes a few seconds to boot up instead of 10-20minutes, it loads all programs, and everything is smooth again.
Turned out to be a hardware thing I guess :)
This issue is now resolved :)
Thank you so much for your time here, Broni. It felt great to have someone helping me and caring about my problem. <3 You guys here are heroes!
You're very welcome and I'm glad to hear good news :)
Be aware, that once hard drive develops some issue, it can't be relied on 100%.
Make sure, you have everything backed up.
Good luck!
