Windows 7 download Proxy Server

No sure if it's the right place and the right title.

I recently helped at a friend's place to update their 5 computers and many updates from many software were not updated for long time. The download process was slow and repetitive.

Is it possible to set up a proxy server in one of the PCs so other PCs can use the same download (say Windows update)?

Your suggestion works very well for environment with PCs of same brand, same/similar configurations. My friends are dads with little tech know-how and their families have Dell, HP, Asus, Mac Book purchased across 6 years. I was thinking if there's a handy proxy server, they (or me) don't need to bother to download and admin them manually. (But a Windows Home Server is too expensive and adds another layer of technology, too complicated for them).
