Just changed my old Win XP for a Win 7 setup. After booting up and trying to connect to the Internet for Win 7 updates, kept getting the msg 'Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration' from the diagnostic tool in Win 7.
I simply connected my Win XP router (Asus AAM 6000EV) to the Win 7 assuming it would be recognised without going through the Win 7 network setup wizard. Tried entering 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of Win 7 pc and got bounced to the diagnosic tool again.

I reverted to XP machine, reconnected the router and immediately got happily back on the internet. Also checked and successfully accessed the router via 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

Reason I reused my router is because it performed very well, despite being 6 years old and was of course already correctly configured for my ISP account.
Win 7 is just another OS, so can't believe it's just because it's a wired router (most wireless routers have wired capability too anyway). Other suggestion is that Win 7 only supports 'compatible' routers - can't believe that either.

Help ! Don't want to have to buy an unnecessary new router if I can avoid it.

Your right the OS has nothing to do with it.

Is it possible the Wired connection on the Win7 machine is disabled?
Did the screen ever pop up asking you if the connection was Home, Work, or public?

It is possible the wired connection in Win 7 is disabled; how do I check that out ?
No pop up screen at all.

There has to be an easier way but here's all I know to tell you.

    Go to Control Panel.
Change from category view to small Icons.
    Click on network sharing center
In the top of the left pane select change adapter settings.

Thanks - just sitting down with guests for dinner, so I'll get to it tomorrow (it's 20.15 here in UK).
Soon as I get some results, I'll get back to you.
Incidentally, I access the internet on my XP machine via a net adapter card and the router. Don't know if the presence of the net adapter card makes a difference to the configuration settings re XP vs W7 - or does W7 have the equivalent of a net adapter c ard also ?

Just follow instructions from Scott and you will be presented with available connection devices. Right click on the adapter and select Connect/Disconnect, it should open another box, cick on the adapter name and a small drop down will appear below and then click Connect. That is how it works for a wireless adapter, I guess the cable connection will be the same.

It may also be worth checking in Device Manager under Network to make sure the device is correctly installed, you may need to update the drivers for Windows 7 use.

That did the trick - and I also (advised by my ISP) opened Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings and ticked 'Automatically Detect Settings' box. Many thanks - this thread can be closed, unless you want to keep it open for other members with the same problem. If the problem resurfaces, I will open a new thread. Thanks again.
