I'm thinking of now making my tower run Windows 7 now but I am getting told I should run 64bit. I'm not sure how much ram i need to make it run at peak performance and keeping the cost down too. I also would like to know if they have Windows Movie Maker from Vista on Windows 7 too.

RAM? I'd suggest 6GB for 64-bit as minimum. Maybe you can 'get away' with 4GB.

As for Windows Movie Maker, you need to download Windows Live Movie Maker.

I wondered the same and asked the question in Windows 7 needs RAM but how much? and there were quite a few answers and opinions but I also went google on the subject.

My take on it is that if you don't run any memory intensive programs, 2 GB for each memory channel should be fine. Dual Channel = 4 GB, Triple Channel = 6 GB. If you run memory intensive programs like Photoshop, twice those numbers is probably what you need.

Arie runs an Intel Core i7 920 (which has a Triple Channel memory controller) and 12 GB RAM. I guess that's why he suggests 6 GB as a minimum. However, to the best of my knowledge, there are no 1.5 GB or 3 GB RAM modules, only 1 GB, 2 GB or 4 GB which makes it difficult/impossible to get a matched kit, adding up to 6 GB on a Dual Channel system.

Well i totally agree on that 4/6 Gb will do fine for most common systems and agree on those power users out there make that the double value
Just depending if you have a dual or triple channel system should make the difference is choice 4/8 for dual channel and 6/12 for triple channel systems

I have been running all 64 bits os fine with a dual channel mainbord and run any demanding program/game fine with either 4 or 8 Gb memory

Although i must say that 8 Gb memory seems to slow down the booting on my system by a fraction.

Well Im running some high end games and then 3d modeling programs such as Solidworks Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max maybe Mudbox. So would i need 6 gb or more for running those programs cuz they are memory hogs it looks like.

Assuming that you're referring to the hardware in your system details, Intel Core i7-860 has a Dual Channel memory controller. The choices are 4 GB or 8 GB and I think there are 16 GB kits as well. I built a system based on that processor for a friend. He's using Photoshop a lot and I got 8 GB for him. If the programs you run are memory hogs or not, I don't know but go google on it.

Since your system has 4 GB, it won't hurt starting with that and if you find that you need more, then get 8 GB.

Corsair doesn't recommend adding a second 4 GB kit to an existing, even if they are identical. They recommend getting a tested 8 GB kit but that might be a marketing trick. Arie's system details indicate that he has two 6 GB Corsair kits. Maybe he can tell us if he had to do some magic to get them working together?

So then 6 gb of ram is out the question. I can say they are they deal with high graphical objects to say the least. Its not the marketing trick u could be right so i would have to go with another company then and I think its cuz hes running tri channel so he might be going off of 3 4gb that might help us understand how he did it.

Nope, nothing. I just purchaced 2 6GB kits. Just made sure they're on the Memory QVL list.

I don't see Corsair XMS3 on his list though...

Your motherboard and processor only support dual channel memory.

Well, it's a jungle out there. Corsair has an 8 GB kit which has no AMD or Intel specific memory profiles (BEMP or XMP respectively) but it still comes in an AMD version (CMX8GX3M4B1333C9) and in an Intel version (CMX8GX3M4A1333C9). For my next build, I have decided on Gigabyte GA-870A-UD3. Guess which version is on Gigabyte's Memory QVL list ... ... !

I have checked out the ram companies themselves and still need to figure out which one is better tho each one. The highest i saw so far that recommends for ram is 3ds Max it said 8gb recommended but does that mean its the limit or should i go more to make it go faster. I also need to know is this a good ram type to put in my computer should i keep looking with a different company in mind http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231380. I would like to know if there are any other good computer part sites other then tiger direct and newegg.

Almost forgot and i really would like to see if I could for cheaper. If I have a vista disc that isn't meant for my computer and I know if I should do the upgrade to Windows 7 or is that not a good thing to do. I also want to know if I can reformat my hard drive with that version more then once and how would I have to.

I suggest you start a new thread on this topic. I close this thread since you have another one going on RAM.
