I have just upgraded my gaming PC from XP64 bit to Windows 7 Pro 64 bit because of poor game play. When I realised that my XP32 PC was out performing my XP64 PC (in Bioshock 2 FPS was OK when standing still, but while panning around the 64 bit PC was very jerky as if texture loading times were causing problems as new items came into view) something had to be done!!!

My question - Is Directx 9.0c required for Windows 7 64 bit or will I get the full gaming performance without it? The games I will be installing this week are Morrowind, Oblivion, Dragon Age, Portal, Bioshock 2 & Flight Simulator X.

I note that the Microsoft Directx download page lists Windows 7 as a requirement but does not mention Windows 7 64 bit (although XP64 bit is mentioned) - I don't understand, any help would be much appreciated

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

AFAIK Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11 as default - check out what you have installed ....

Orb > All Programs > Accessories > Run and type in dxdiag > Enter

I run 7 Pro x64 and both 64 bit and 32 bit DirectX 11 are installed.

Can't help you with games - the last game I played was Doom - 20 years ago? :)

DX11 was installed :) but some DX9 games still would not work :(

I bit the bullet and installed DirectX 9.0c Feb 2010 redist.

    I can confirm it:-
    - installed on Windows 7 64 bit Pro without giving any errors
    - allowed Morrowind (which did not run before) to run OK.

No problem, too many people ignore help from others. Once I realised that DX11 was present and without problems, it pointed the way to needing to install DX9 instead of trying to repair DX11.
