I have a 2003 domain controller and I am impliminting Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 which requires it be installed on a domain controller. My current (an only) domain controller is a 2003 server, my exchange server will be on a windows 2008 server. Cani have a PDC which is 2003 and a BDC wich is 2008?

Why would you install exchange on a DC? Do you have no other choice?

You do not need to install exchange on a domain controler. Again installing exchange and a DC role is a bad idea.

Are you mising SBS and STD server or something.

Yes you can have a 2003 and a 2008 DC, just need to keep forest and domain level at 2003.

Also there is no more PDC and BDC. AD is a multimaster system

I come from a large enterprise background, now I am working for 1000 user company (very small to me) the simpelest Exchange uses SBS and does not have the DC requirment, acording to microsoft critera we are too big for the simple but not big enought to justify an enterpise set up (what I am used to doing) the midle method requires exchange be on a DC. Thanks for the confirmation of 2003DC and 2008DC it's only part I was un clear about.

You are incorrect, no install of exchange requiers it to be on a DC, you may want to re check that.

I have exchange servers on simple 2 server networks, one DC and one exchange server.

I have also had multi backend servers ... again none were DCs.

The only time you are requiered to install exchange on a DC is if you use SBS as your DC, and you dont want to buy a second server for exchange.

Even with SBS you can install a second server (STD / ENT) for exchange.

If you have 1000 users, you should be able to afford a second server.
