Windows 2000 & Win 98

I am using Win 2000 as server and want to access it from my
Win 98 laptop. I have a lan network for cable and am using that to connect.

I have gone into Network Neighborhood properties in both computers and have named the computers into the same workgroup.

Both computers appear but when I try to access Win 2000 from Win 98, I can't get past the password. None of my user passwords work. I have gone into passwords in Win 98 and checked allow remote access.

Nothing seems to get me past the password. I created a local user on Win 2000 for my laptop but it only shows up where I created it in the Control Panel (passwords and users) and not in the network.

I noticed in Win 2000 in the advanced network section that there are Windows components that can be added. Do I have to add these? Is there a network password that I should choose somewhere?

I can see both computers on both computers, but can't access either one.

I chose the home network instead of the business network. Does it make a difference? Should I choose automatically logon in windows?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a book that addresses all these issues? Simply?

Wiry - the problem is too many books. Hard to figure out where to start. Here is better.

Do you have any drives or folders shared on the PCs?

On the 9x PC, do you have file/printer sharing enabled?

 

I have all folders and files shared on the 2000.

I have remote administrator enabled on the 9x. I haven't checked to see if the files/folders are shared because basically
all I want to do with the 9x is access the 2000 from another part of the house.

I enabled sharing on my 9x laptop and now I can access the laptop from the 2000. But I can't access the 2000 from the laptop because I can't get past the password.

 

Unless you have security concerns with your LAN, just set the permissions on both the share and the drive to full control for "everyone" and you should be fine.

 

I thought I had done that on the 2000. Could you tell me where the locations are to do that? Just to make sure I've done it right?

I have precisely the same problem and have found no way round it , If I try to access the laptop (Win2000) from any other network machine , access is denied pending a password , none of the passwords work. Any machine on the network running on Win98 or WinME can be accessed from the laptop but not vice versa , have scoured Windows Help and found nothing . It relly is quite frustrating.

Mike: I found out how to solve that problem. In Win 98 and 95, you have to tell it that it is a Microsoft NT Server. Go to My Computer, Control Panel and click on Network. Make sure your Primary Network Login is set to Microsoft Networks. Then darken the Client for Microsoft Networks in the network components list at the top of the page. Click on properties. The Microsoft Network NT box will come up. Put a check in the Log on to Windows NT Domain Box and make sure your workgroup name is in the domain box. The shut down and boot up.

You will now get a window that has your laptop computer's name and asks for its password. Then I get another message that says it can't find the server, but I just click ok and boot up.
Then I can access the desktop with my laptop.

See if it works for you.

It may not be the final answer but at least it got me here.

Mike: my desktop is Win 2000 and my laptop is Win 98. The instructions I gave you should go on the win9x machine.
