I am currently running Win98se with about 128 megs of memory. I am wanting to install a full version of the next windows, but I dont know if it should be Win 2000 or Windows XP Pro. I use my computer at home for personal use. I haven't heard much about either OS, so I thought I would ask around and see.

There isn't much difference in price, so I could go either way. Any opinions would be appreciated.

    Thank you
    Jeff

    Hi jfl155

From a hardware view, 2k friendlier, XP much more demanding.... and this spills over into drivers and devices connected to it. Current M$ "support" about 6 years advantage to XP Pro over 2k.. XP Pro purchased cost subtracted out of a new system.. paying $250 / $500 for new hardware that comes with it.

I guess the newest isn't always the best. Besides since I am just using my computer at home for personal use, I do not need all the extra complications.

    Thanks for the info.

(edit note: I posted this to an identical thread in the 2000 section before I saw this one. Merged the two and the one in the 2000 section is now gone)

If you intend to stick with the same hardware and unless you have some needs that XP does better than 2K, I'd suggest 2K-pro. The OS is smaller and the hardware requirements are lower. It will run pretty well with 128Mb of memory although 256Mb would give some improvement. It will run pretty will with the (probably) 8meg video board you have now.

XP is real picky about hardware and chances are excellent you'd have to replace some of yours. Memory and video probably (for performance) and maybe other hardware that just won't run with XP but runs fine with 2K.

Things that XP-Pro does better - for a home setup:
    - backwards compatibility for running older apps
    - more hand-holding wizards for setting things up
    - a little better with USB devices
